Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.


We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Are stories about Van Horn, TX true?

Hey all,

We are going to be travelling from Del Rio, TX to Mesa, AZ in a few weeks. Our plan is for three days/two nights on the road. Our first day of travel would reasonably take us to Van Horn, TX. In researching that location, I found a number of posts that indicate the town will ticket RVers who overnight in either the Love's or Flying J, but those posts were quite dated. So, two questions arise:

1. Does anyone know about the veracity of that information? Or, barring that, has stayed in one of the three Van Horn RV parks and could comment on their suitability for overnighting? Or . . .

2. Has anyone travelled the same route and could recommend where else to stay along the way? Alpine isn't far from Del Rio, so that would leave us a very long second and third day. We would like to avoid overnighting in El Paso. Possible second night destination would be Deming, NM, If Van Horn works out. Other suggestions?

We always stay at the KOA in Van Horn. I know, a lot of people don't like KOAs and we usually don't use them, but this one is easy in and out, nice pull throughs plus they have a little cafe that we always use for breakfast the next day. Easy drive from Van Horn to Deming - we've stopped at the Escapees park in Deming more times than I can count. We have also gone all the way to Lordsburg from Van Horn - - just depends on how you want to push it. From eight Deming or Van Horn, it is an easy drive to Mesa - which is where we are now.

My home town is Las Cruces, NM, but I've lived in the east for about 30 years. This means we travel that route to see family at least twice a year. We've come to depend on the Desert Willow RV Park in Van Horn for those one-nighters (we keep our travel days short). It's certainly not a destination park, but it's clean and the folks that run it are very nice. It's also extremely inexpensive with Escapees and other club memberships or a military ID - $14/night the last two years. It's a mom-and-pop operation and their commercial competition sometimes finds a way to make them "disappear" from RVparky.com but you can find them by just searching Google.

Thanks for the advice, Barb and Rob. That puts our mind at ease for the first leg of our trip to Mesa, for sure. One question for each of you: would we need to call ahead and book a site, or have you found it safe to 'take your chances' on there being an available spot when you arrived?

Nicole and Robin,

With regards to Walmart, there is a website which lists what Walmarts do not allow camping in their parking lot.  It is put out by Allstays.  Allstays Walmart Locations

As usual, when stopping for the night in such parking areas, always ask management in the stores whether parking is allowed and if there are any particular areas that one can use.

As retired full-timers, we tend to travel short and arrive early. A lot of folks drive longer days and stop for the night hours later than we do. We've arrived early afternoon with no reservations at Desert Willow and they had a spot for us... but - depending on the time of year - the place filled up by supper time. We usually make a reservation, though, just to be safe. Desert Willow doesn't charge us until we arrive, so no harm done if there are changes.
