Depends on what day you're going…and what time you're passing through Atlanta.

I have a buddy that always goes through on Sunday between 0900 and 1200…and he stays right on I-75 through town. Me…if I was going that way on 75 I would take the west side beltway and skip downtown.

I would not drive through before 0930 on a weekday or after 1400 on a weekday…just too much traffic.

In bigger cities…I generally tend to stay out of the far right hand lane where I usually am when outside the city. That way you're out of the entering and exiting idiots cutting people off and you're never in the lane that goes away…and I don't go through during rush hour.

I would stay away from downtown on Sunday home Falcon's games and anytime for home Braves games.

For your route I would just take the west side beltway.

Doesn't really affect your planned route…but be advised that a piece of 85 in Atlanta fell down in a fire last week and will be closed for *months* according to the state. It was about 2-3 miles east of the 75/85 interchange…given that and the corresponding potential backups on 75 as folks route around it I would avoid downtown through this summer anyway.

We will be going thru on a Sunday,
Leaving Elko around 10. Am which should put us in Atlanta around 11.30-12:
I am guessing that 285W is the beltway around the city. How much long will the belt way make the trip around
I would like to get thru there earlier but there is no chance in hell I will get the wife out any earlier😩

Bob, there is only one way with out going waaay out of the way.  I-285.  West side is shorter in your case.

We just did this past Sunday, with the rig, and it was an non-issue.  The secret is Sunday (or Saturday) as early in the morning as you can.  Get out the traffic function on the iPhone or Google maps on smart phone and decide on the west or east side at the 285 junction.

There is nothing special or different about I-285 as road.  Just traffic but as long as you don't go at the wrong time no big deal.

Now, all that said, on a Sunday morning, coming south, you can drive right through Atlanta.  That part of the road from I-75 is not closed.  Done that as well.  We decide based on monitoring traffic.  There are no clearance issue straight through AND semis can't go that way regardless.  So on Sunday AM EARLY it will be mostly a non event.

The road that is closed is I-85 north east of the "split" with I-75.

Bill

I know you will enjoy the RV Dreams Rally.  You'll meet a lot of nice people and find out all kinds of things you were doing wrong. LOL  Just kidding.  Your seasoned pros now.

We hope you will make it to the NHOG Rally in Spearfish, SD.  It will be a great location, a lot of fun, and you won't have to think as much as you do the RV-Dreams Rally but will meet a whole group of great people.  We do seminars but most of it, as Neil says, is FunStuff©.

Hope you and Karen can make it.  As we say, its only South Dakota.

Bob:

Independent note - As you will be around Sevierville for the rally do not take route 411 out of or into Sevierville that connects to I-40 to the east.  Just not recommend for a big rig. Can be done - I don't and the last time Howard kind of regretted it as I recall when he took the shortcut.

Route 66 off I-40 from the north is just fine down to the CG.  Lota traffic, but I think the construction is done - or at least a lot of it.

Just FYI

If it's Sunday my buddy goes straight through on 75 through downtown as long as it's before noon. Me…Ima not going that way and would take 285 around. Never taken the rig around Atlanta but we've been on both sides of the beltway and the traffic is usually less on the west side even if it's 15-20 miles longer over all but it depends on which highway you're on. On 75 taking the beltway west side on 285 is only 5 or 10 miles longer than straight through and we make it our policy never to drive through the middle of downtown unless there's no other way.

I agree with Bill…the road that runs into Sevierville from the North and goes right past Riverview CG is the best way in…take 40 to whatever road that is and it's a straight shot 20 or so miles south to the CG. Beware your GPS which…despite the fact that you can clearly see the left turn lane into the CG…might try to route you through the neighborhood on the west side of the road to make a U turn. Never did figure out why with a turn lane it did that…but as President Reagan used to say…Trust, but verify.

285W will be the way we go, thanks for the help guys.
Bill I am not sure we will have the time to get to the NH rally.
We won't be leaving Ma. Until July 7. We would like to spend some time in Michigan Lake area, go to Myride , go to camp New Horizon for a visit before our warranty is up and then hope to be in West Texas by November 1, we plan to spend the winter months in Texas, New Mexico and Arizona before heading into the Utah area for April or May.
We would like to stay for a month at each of our stops for the winter, do you guys have any suggestions for places to go, your suggestions in the past have been great

As to 285W - just be sure and check live traffic before committing to the direction - "Ask me how I know this."

We really like Kerrville, Tx and Buckhorn Lake Resort.  30.119947 -99.198330 will take you to the front door.  H & L have held two rallies there and it is a really nice (albeit commercial) CG.  That area is referred to as the "Texas Hill Country" by some we know who lived there.  Great food - lots of steak.  Run down to San Antonio to visit all that stuff and the LBJ Texas White House is pretty close if your into that kind of thing.  Was worth it for us.  Been there a couple of times and Kerrville is big enough to have facilities but not too big.  We've been around Arizona a lot but really don't have anyplace special to recommend as in a great "It factor" for a month as you have the 50 amp princess requirement. But when we're around Phoenix we stay at Leaf Verde, Buckeye - west of Phoenix - really nice park but again a commercial CG. Front Door - 33.431723 -112.573909  Out of all the Phoenix traffic and 4 miles to the usual food / store needs.  Like the place for the purpose and drive 3 miles west and you in the desert. (Well, all of that area is desert but you wouldn't know it. LOL)  Make a reservation NOW.  That place fills up for the winter as to ALL CG's around that area.  No different than Florida.  There are many others but we like this one for various reason.

We love the area.  Naturally your pretty close to Prescott, Sedona and Flagstaff if you want to look for some snow in the winter.  Grand Canyon South Rim as well is just NW of Flagstaff.  All of this up I-17 to the north.  Remember, Flagstaff is at 7,000 so all of that area "gets winter" along I-40 in AZ, etc.

BTW Leaf Verde, Buckeye is just 100 miles east of the boondocking capital of the RV world, Quartzsite.  You don't need reservations in Quartzsite.  Just show up and claim some sand in the desert.  That's a whole different conversation but one you might like to experience for a few days.  But I strongly suggest getting winter reservations now for the places you plan to stay for the winter.

Sorry we may not see you this year.

Safe travels and say Hi to the RV-Dreams gang for us.

Bill
