Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.


We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Looks like I get to do some more learning.  After our move to Oregon, we went back to get Direct TV for our rig.  With the new technology, it looks like we had to go with a Genie DVR which won't work with our old satellite dish.  Since there was already a proper dish (SWM?) onsite, the technician hooked us up to it.  Now, I need to research and find a proper dish that we can take with us when we move from here next year (or whenever).

While I was never insistent on having HD on our TV before, I am taking a liking to the picture we are now getting with the proper dish and the Genie, so I'll want to be able to keep that quality when we travel again.

With that in mind, is there some kind of dish setup for Direct TV like the Carryout, or whatever, that will be HD, or does one have to stick with the "stationary" satellite dishes on a tripod?

Yes, all (new) DirecTV receivers require a SWM LNB. I think you will enjoy the Genie.  Nice box IMO.

Regarding your previous antenna, I surmise it was an 18" antenna, you had Standard Definition and it wasn't a roof mount?  Assuming that is correct the "TV4RV.com" product with Tripod will work fine with Genie.

You probably could get the antenna and LNB (SWM version) for less money but you will need the better tripod.  This is the package H & L have recommended.

You need dish - the 3 satellite LNB SWM LNB head  -  an AU9-SL3 - for satellites  99 / 101 / 103 and a PI29 power supply used to power the LNB.  The cable from the LNB (antenna) goes to the power supply and then on to the receiver.That's about it.

Naturally you may be able to find all these components for less money if you hunt around but that's the list.

I also read back through the whole thread again and found Howard's post, after I had asked the questions above.  Apparently no carryout-type antenna will work with DirecTV's HD service, so the tripod mount is the only way to go.  No big deal.  I just need to get a new tripod, probably a new tripod mast, and the new satellite dish.

I'm trying to get used to HD.  I was watching a newscast the other day and the lady anchor's face literally looked like it was painted on, what with all the make-up they require to look right on TV.  The wife says I was sitting too close to the TV since I was at my computer desk at the time.

If you get your direct tv service through ATT you can get unlimited data.

 We've had AT&T phone service in the past.  No thanks.  Even with unlimited data, it wouldn't be worth it to us. We used to have dropped calls and voice messages that came through 3 days after the call.  When we lived in our last stix-n-brix, I would literally have to go outside to make or take calls.

While AT&T wants folks to "bundle" their service with DirecTV, we'll stick with our Verizon services.
