Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Fall Travel Plans

I-81 to I-77 in Va. to I-40 West seems to be the best. Look up RVParkReviews and click on NC then the City; hope this helps. Pieere

We are doing a workamping gig in Pa. this summer and we are planning on visiting the Asheville, NC area on our return to Florida for the winter, and the question we need answered is this.

We plan on taking I-81 south to I-26 into Asheville or would it be better to take I to I-40 and than to Asheville.  We know that we are going to have some Mountains to cross either way, but is one way better or worse than the other.

Next question would be what is a good campground to stay at in the Asheville area?

Thank you in advance.

I would take 26 to Ashville, it's a good hour quicker. We live in this area and this is how we go. We haven't stayed in any campgrounds in Ashville but there are alot of campgrounds on your way and closer to Boone. It is about 30 to 45 minutes outside of Ashville. There are there good campgrounds in that area...Honeybear Campground, Flintlock campground and Grandfather Mountain campground. You can google any one of those and see photos. So much to see in that area!!
If you are staying in Ashville, you have to visit the Biltmore House. It is amazing!

Jon,

Your route to Asheville is up to you. The Interstate System through the NC Mountains is an easy drive - truly a non-event.  Coming down from PA, we prefer I-81 and have done both I-77 to I-40 or over to I-26.  They are both nice trips.  I-26 may be a bit more senic.

We have stayed in a number of CGs around Asheville. How long will you be there?  Bear Creek is nice as a base, but offerred us little beyond a place to stay.  French Broad was a bit more rustic, but not as fancy - we liked being able to park parallel 40' from the river!

The nicest was Campfire Lodgings.  If you cannot reserve sites 1 - 4, the view is not worth the climb up the mountain.  Our 40' DP had no problem on the entrance road, but it is steep - again not a problem, just not knowing what is around the next curve the first time up messes with your mind.

We truly enjoyed a week at Campfire Lodgings.  Costs more, but it is absolutely the best.  It is all about the view.

I agree, visit the Biltmore Estate.  Another must is go to the Grove Park Inn just north of I-240 (historic hotel) to have a lunch on the verandah.  Amazing!  Tour the hotel and grounds. The histroy of its contstruction is well documented and is hard to fatham.  Built before modern transport of materials and primarily of stones hauled in make it amazing.  One of the elevators actually goes up through a part of the chimeny off the lobby.  The two fireplaces a huge!

Enjoy!

Would like to thank all replies, and the information is once again very good.  We are leaning on going I-81 to I-26 as it is a new route for us, we had already did I-77.

Also we are looking at Bear Creek CG, even though we hear that is quite noisey.

We are doing the Biltmore Estate, and hope to drive our towed over to the Skyway.

This we are planning to do in the middle of October and hope that the fall colors are starting to show.

This we will be doing during the middle of the week so are chances are probably a little better.

Once again thank you for all of your help.
