Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.


We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Top Five Kentucky Experiences

Hi all:

We're going to Kentucky this summer.  I need some help from you Kentuckians (is that what you're called?) and from RVers who have been there a bunch.   Please list five things/places you feel are the top five "must see&do" while there. 

I'm looking for iconic things, ie things which the state is known for --natural wonders of course but also historical, cultural, kirky, etc.  Off the top of my head I've come up with: 1. Horse Country 2. Caves.    

What are other things one should experience to get a good feel for the state of Kentucky?  e.g. someone like Howard might say go to a basketball game!  Which I would if we were there at the right time. :) 

Don't worry about the logistics of getting to these places.  I can deal with that later.  Just looking for ideas from fellow RVers.  And yes, only five b/c I want you to really prioritize your choices.

We enjoyed the Louisville Slugger Museum and factory tour in downtown Louisville.

Butcher Hollow, childhood home of Loretta Lynn near Van Lear, Kentucky (east side of the state) was a quirky little stop. The old "company store" is owned by her brother and, at that time, he personaly gave the tour of the old homestead up the road. Had a great time meeting him and listening to his stories, we could have stayed there for hours talking to him smile.

 

Abe Lincoln Birthplace near Elizabethtown is nice, while there take in a show at the Lincoln Jamboree, a live country western music show that has been going on since the 1950's and is located just down the road.

 

National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green is cool.

 

I didn't mention Mammoth Cave since you already have caves on your list. These are just a few of things we have done when visiting Kentucky. Enjoy your trip.

Hit http://www.pattis-settlement.com/ and Land Between the Lakes, which are close to each other.   Cumberland Gap is also worthwhile. 

We haven't been to Bardstown but it is historic and has great bourbon distilleries in the area.

Paducah in western Ky on the Ohio has a thriving art community and a great little downtown area along the river....

Churchill Downs while in Louisville is iconic

The others suggestions are all solid...

5) Of Course: ( Kentucky Downs ) or Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington!

You may want to consider the The KY Bourbon Trail

All others mentioned are good ones. 

 

In my opinion, The KY Horse Park, Louisville Slugger Museum, and The KY Derby Museum are must sees.

 

Enjoy the Bluegrass State and its Unbridled Spirit!

I'm not a Ky'in, but did do the state two summers ago including many of the suggests from other posters.  The Bourbon Trail stretches across the state so it's a multiple day schedule. If you only do one, and I suspect that everyone has a personal preference, we liked Woodford Reserve the best. Part of that reason is that getting there takes you thru some gorgeous race horse country.  It's not on the Trail, but we liked Buffalo Trace in Franklin. Mainly because the crowds are smaller and it's rustic.
