Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.


We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

This one is new to me.  Here in Oklahoma City, they have advertised that the radio station that I listen to the most is also going to be on FM on digital HD radio.

While I am interested in this format to some degree, I can't find much about it online.  Do any of you have experience with this format of radio?

Will a portable unit be able to plug into one's car stereo to be heard through the car audio system?

Is there an issue with the "range" of HD radio transmissions?

I'd like to know more about this before I buy anything and I trust the "family" on RV Dreams for than I do salesmen.

I have heard of it too and have never paid too much attention to it until you brought it up. Here is a wiki on it that explains it pretty good and the best part is that it seems to be the standard that is catching on all over the world as far as radio digital broadcast goes (I didn't even know there was more than one standard of digital radio broadcast!).

The Wiki article is very good.  Here’s a shorter version:

This is a new transmission standard for radio.  Like FM was new after AM.  This is the new “digital” version of FM.

It is an option for radio stations to install the new transmitters for this type of transmission. The FCC does not require it.  Old AM and FM radio will still be around a long time.  But as to quality, it is like CD’s are to LP’s.  Better, but not like FM is better than AM.  It’s better, but not an order of magnitude when using car radio speakers.

The range is a bit less than standard FM radio.  That will be improved as the FCC allows stations to increase their power.

“HD Radio” is just a marketing name.  Nothing more.  (You have to call it something, they choose “HD.”)

We are just beginning to see some receivers come into the market place.  It will be in factory installed “radios” in the high end cars shortly.  Lower priced cars in about 3 year – maybe more.

As to “what’s on” HD radio.  Just whatever they program.  You would have to check the station’s website – or call them.
