Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Posting Pictures in Blogger

I have been using smugmug and blogger to post daily blogs. While smugmug seems to let me copy links for insertion into blogger, I can't figure out how to actually copy a picture from smugmug to insert in blogger. Alternatively I can insert pictures directly into blogger from my computer via the "image" button, but that seems to insert all pictures at the beginning of the post without any ability to place the pictures in the appropriate place within the blog. In order to get pictures in the right place, I have to first insert all the pictures in reverse order and then insert the text around the pictures. (That's not how my brain works!)

Can anyone tell me how to insert pictures into blogger in specific places within the blog?

Many readers have reported that they use smugmug. I see the advantage for secure storage but I can't figure out the advantage for blog posting. Can anyone enlighten me?

Are the smugmug users actually uploading full sized (1 mg each) pictures on the road?

Thanks!

I also use blogger for my journal.  I have experienced the same frustration with picture insertion as you have.  I don't have an answer as yet.  I will be watching the forum to see what comes along.  I am so glad you asked the question!

Just highlight, cut and paste your photo from where it goes when you upload it to where you want it. Bear in mind that if you have chosen your photo as center when you upload you can't move it left or right but you can move it anywhere within the blog.

I haven't used Smugmug so can't help you there.

Thanks Sandra. It doesn't appear that cut and paste work while in blogger (for text or pictures).  Could there perhaps be a setting that enables those functions?

I use Blogger and SmugMug and this is how I do it. It seems complicated but once you've done it a couple times, it's actually pretty easy.

1) write the blog without photos

2) enter two extra lines where you want to insert the photos (note - I only put them between paragraphs and I center the photos)

3) click the EDIT HTML tab

4) find the first extra lines and enter the following

<center>

</center>

The code for the photos will be inserted between the center tags

5) I paste in the code for a photo and I will substitute the actual photo ID

The code is:
<a target="_blank" href="http://YOU.smugmug.com/photos/99-L.jpg"><img src="http://YOU.smugmug.com/photos/99-Th.jpg"></a>

This will open the Th sized photo (thumbnail) in a new window and show the L (large) photo I uploaded. If you want to just display the image use:

<img src="http://YOUsmugmug.com/photos/99-S.jpg">
and you can use M for medium and L for large, the S is for small.

Once you know the code you want to use, copy and paste that every time you want a photo, then you will replace the 99 with the actual photo ID.

6) In another window open SmugMug and go to the first photo you want to insert (I use the ALL THUMBS view and click the photo). Look in the browser address and you will the actual photo address...the part you want to copy is the code just before the size. Something like 321491382_44Pci or 321490453_VG7hx  That is what you will copy and paste over the 99 in the code above.

Again, I know it sounds complex but really isn't that bad. Try it with one photo. If it works for you, let me know and I'll post the line spacing tips.

Hi Donna,

Thanks forr your help.  I'm still doing something not quite right.  I get the html part -- my test posting seems to think there should be a phot there.  What I think I'm not doing quite right is replacing your 99 example with the correct part of the webaddress.  Here's my sample.  Which numbers do I use?  Should I begin with the 5492... or the 3359...?

thanks so much!
Leslie

ps -- Do you really upload all your pictures in full size to smugmug?  It seems as if I'll have to wait until I get back to a DSL connection to do that.

Leslie, I use Blogger all the time and don't have the problems others seem to experience. Yes, the pictures all load at the top of the post, but then I just cut and paste them where I want them. I, too, write the post without pictures first, then use the load picture icon to load the pictures. I use the center formatting because I like having the text in an orderly paragraph format.

Once the pictures are loaded at the top, I just place my cursor where I want the photo, insert a couple of extra lines and then past the picture.

Hope all of the advice helps.

I don't know of any settings that need to be changed, Leslie. I just upload them through 'Add Image'. They wind up at the top of the blog. I highlight, cut and paste it where I want it and it works! I know of so many people that have problems with Blogspot but I've never experienced much of a problem. Sometimes the site is down and that's about it. I know there are limitations to the site. Some people photos won't enlarge when you click on them but mine always have. Sure wish I could sit with you and see if I could figure out the problem.

Your right Sandra...it would be nice to set down and see what they do. I have no problem except for the amount of pictures I can upload to the page. I guess you can have that increased???

Speedy, you can upload five at a time but you can put as many as you want on your blog. Just keep uploading five!

Leslie,

As you know, we use TypePad rather than Blogger, but we do use SmugMug.  The way we insert photos into our blog should be the same for you using the "img" tag according to the Blogger "help".

In SmugMug, find the photo you want to insert.  Click on that photo.  Under the photo are the words "Share photo:" followed by a link -  "links, forums, blogs".  Click on the "links, forums, blogs" link.

That brings up a page of Gallery Links and Direct Photo Links.  Just click on the link for the size photo you want to insert (I usually use Small).

Then, in your text (your post) using the "Edit HTML" tab in Blogger insert a couple lines where you want the photo to appear and type <img src= and paste the URL link for the photo you just got from SmugMug.  Close the "tag" and your photo should appear.

It becomes second nature and that's how I insert photos every day.  That way I only upload photos once and then I can link them into our Journal, RV-Dreams.com, this Forum or anywhere else.  And if I change blog hosts, my photos aren't stuck on the prior blog's servers.  The HTML would follow a conversion and I wouldn't have to re-insert photos all over again.

By the way, I take my photos on a Basic setting in my camera to keep the file sizes down.  So I don't upload the highest resolutions to SmugMug.  That takes too long time without a DSL or better connection.  Since most of our photos are used on the web, it's no big deal.  And I can print the photos up to the "Large" setting in SmugMug without any noticeable loss of quality.  Yeah, it's not great if I want a poster size some day, but we don't have any wall space for posters anyway.  biggrin

It should be the second/last group of numbers/letters or the 335915768_vp3bm

I resize my photos to 800x600 but don't optimize them (no additional compression). That seems to work out well and most folks are okay with it. I keep the original size on my computer and depending on which camera I use that could be 3264x2448 or 1280x960.

Leslie,

Yeah ... one thing I really don't like about Blogger is that photos are always added to the top when you use their image tool.  But, there's so much to like about Blogger - we find our ways!

I use Picasa Web Albums - mainly because I use Picasa for all my photos on my computer and it's single-click easy to upload to the web album.  Once they're on the web album, you can click on "Link to this photo" and grab the complete html code that can then be placed exactly where you want it in your blog.

I see that SmugMug provides the basic URL to the photo, not the complete linking code.  Therefore, you need to either:

1. as Howard and Froggi suggest - add the <img src=  code yourself.  Make sure to enclose the URL in quotes, and also make sure to close the img tag with />  (this will not make a link, it will just display the picture)

2. use Blogger's upload image tool and put the URL in the space provided for "Add image from the web" .  This will take the photo's URL and add the img code as well as the linking (a href) code.

HOWEVER, it will still put the image at the top smile.gif
Oh well, ya gotta get used to cut and paste, to put the photo's code where you want it.   It'll look something like:
<a href="http://myphotos.smugmug.com/photos/338864448_jk5hz-S.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px;" src="http://myphotos.smugmug.com/photos/338864448_jk5hz-S.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a>When you cut - make sure to start with the <a  and end with the a>

I'm still hoping that blogger will someday make their image upload tool place the code at the cursor location.

till then, we do what we gotta do.

When blogger puts the picture at the top, I just click on it and drag down.  You need to do it a little at a time, but  it works.  Just be sure to  have it set for none, left middle or right.  Simple.

We were thinking about starting a blog, as we are keeping a Travel Journal from when we started fulltiming.  After reading all of the problems stated above we think it best not to mess with it.  Would love to do it but, not that tech savvy.

Jon, Its really not that complicated and doesnt require a techie if you stick to the basics. Most of the problems and complexities you're reading about are from trying do add extras or do something not covered by the standard blog menu. You should give it a try.
With a little help from reading Jim & Chris's Geeks on Tour video lessons, even I started a blog :)

RE: Posting Pictures in Blogger - Mrs Geek to the Rescue

Mrs Geek,

You Solved the problem!  Thanks so much.  I got your method #1 to work perfectly.  What I missed in Howard's instructions was how to close the tag. Thanks so much.  It is certainly far more convenient to be able to post the pictures within the text.

It does seem that blogger works differently depending on some unknown settings.  When my husband logs in to our account, he can cut and paste in the "compose" mode but I can only cut and paste in the "edit html" mode.

A big Thank You!
