Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

name the bird

I saw a very interesting looking bird the other day and can't find anything on the net about it. Linda, I need help. It was "medium size" and was bright white with it's wings and tail trimmed in black. It had a bright red head which lead me to believe it may be a woodpecker but did not look like the ones I am familier with around this area.

Thanks,

Phil

are you sure it's not a red headed woodpecker?

thanks for the reply but no that was not it. This bird was a brilliant white and the black around the wings was at the edges, it was a very pretty bird.

Phil Bob,

I need some more info.

Size: You said medium size.  Compare it to the size of a Robin, smaller, larger or same?

Where did you see it?

1. State or City

2. Around Water, Wooded, Grassland, etc.

3. Perched in a tree, clinging to the trunk of a tree, on the ground, etc.

All of these things will give us clues as to what it was.

OK, here goes.

It was in low flight in a rural, partially wooded area about 20 miles north of Indianapolis. The black around it's wings and tail looked like a band about 1/4 " wide at the outer edges. It was slightly bigger than a robin but not by much.

It was really a beautiful bird, I have never seen one like it before. It's colors were very crisp and bright. Rudee and I were on the motorcycle at the time and no way to grab a photo, sure wish I had one to make it easier.

Thanks,

Phil Bob

My guess has to agree with greenlady and say that it was a Red Headed Woodpecker.  If you were seeing it from the underneath side it would look like it was all white and trimmed in black and then a red head.

Yep I think you are right. Rudee bought me a couple of birding books yesterday for my b-day, isn't she a sweetheart!! Looking in those, I pretty much ruled out almost everything else. Good job Greenlady, sorry I doubted you.

I'm no expert!  though I've been birding for close to 50 years!  so, no worries.

Just glad we figured it out.
