Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Intro - Fulltiming with Toddler?

Hi, we are Ron and Jennifer from Fort Collins, CO.  We have been discussing a cross-country RV adventure (plus maybe a European RV trip) for the past 3 years.  We sold our small farm, sold most of our belongings, started designing a fifth-wheel home... and then my mom became ill, required a bone-marrow transplant... and our plans were put on hold.  Now we are ready to make plans again, with a new little addition - we recently adopted our daughter, Melia, from China!  She is now 15 months old.

At age 42, my husband and I are first-time parents.  Considering this, plus the fact that we've never RV'd fulltime before, we have more than a few concerns and questions, specifically about parenting a toddler on the road!  Fortunately, Melia has a wonderful disposition, and is bonding and attaching to us very well.  Our hope is to travel and live in an RV for at least a year (starting in 2007), and then settle somewhere by the time Melia is ready to start school.

So, here's a few questions / concerns that I'll throw out for comments and suggestions:

1) First, are we crazy to attempt this with a toddler on board?
2) How might our toddler benefit (or not) from this traveling lifestyle experience?
3) Will she run into other children her age at campgrounds to befriend?
4) USA and/or Europe?  What might people's attitudes towards our child be?
5) Any suggestions on RV type, design or amenities (in regards to our toddler's needs)?
6) I am chemically-sensitive and would prefer to use "green" and non-toxic building materials inside our RV to reduce the formaldehyde, stain-repellent sprays, smelly paints, and other off-gassing materials.  Any referrals for a company that will customize the interior of our RV / fifth-wheel?

Thanks for any feedback and ideas!
~Jen

Hi Jen,

No, you are not entirely crazy (maybe a little - just kidding).  The governor of Maine, after he retired, took his wife and two children on the road for a year.  Check out "Where's Molly".  He had a Dutch Star motorhome customized to accomodate the family.  It's a neat web site and would probably answer some of your questions.  New Horizons builds custom fifth-wheels (they are heavy and expensive) and also another one called Spacecraft (long waiting list).  There was a family (with four children) who spent a year on the road in a class C motorhome - can't remember the site but you'd find it listed in hitchitch.com.

Good luck and keep us posted on your plans,

Darrell
