Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
Will a Hard start replace or supplement a failing capacitor?
I have a domestic ac/heat pump that takes 10-20 seconds to fully start. When started it runs just fine - cold air, etc. we have 50 amp and a full 120 volt service.
Will a hard start resolve the slow start problem?
Don't know which model you have but newer (last few years) Mach 8's and the like spin up the blower fan and purposefully wait before starting the compressor. That's in the automatic mode. That is normal operation. This is a different operation then the way AC's worked some years ago. Just commenting to make sure you have a problem.
That said, "hard start kits" are not that expensive. You can always replace and see if it helps. If not, the parts you took out become spares and you will need them someday.

I agree the hard start is cheap and easier to replace. At least that’s my thinking

Well - HEY Chris! Long time no hear from. Hope all is well.
I thought KZ put Coleman AC's in all those Escalades. Our 2006 had Coleman AC's and I actually wish I had them in the New Horizons. Much quieter and except for replacing the hard start kit, they worked really well. In fact two other RV-Dreamers have our Escalade. Did a really nice interior refurb job on it to suit their tastes and its still going strong. That was an outstanding trailer and we'd put all the goodies on it: Big Foot, Satellite, MORryde IS, "H" tires, etc. A sweet RV for a couple of really great people.
Anyway, yea, change the cap and the thermister thing that comes in the kit. What goes bad is usually not the capacitor but the thermister that goes bad from repeated heat cycles. I used to have to change them out about every other year. Carried two spares. Hard to find on the road.
