Potty Talk

I've seen a few posts about, black tanks, TP and related issues. Here's my story. We clogged the toilet drain pipe, yes it has an elbow of some sort. All was good till we couldn't get our we like it, it dissolves well TP. The solution was from our neighbor, a young full timing family. He had made a clog busting device from a 3 foot piece of heavy gauge garden hose. One end had an on/off valve to attach to a hose, the other he had crimped down by making holes near the end and zip tying it almost closed. Before putting it thru the bathroom window I checked it out on the empty site next to us. Impressive. Down the hatch, I regulated the water pressure with the valve and our problem was solved. Sh*t may happen and now it can ; )

Trick with any system that has a bend is to make sure you get an EXTRA FULL BOWL of water down whenever you have solids going down. It is all about get enough water to swoosh through particulate matter.

Barbara, we implemented the full bowl policy right after the clog was cleared. Might have to adjust my dumping schedule ; )

Not all "dissolves well" toilet paper choices are the same.  We used to use Angel Soft all the time, and when I would dump the black tank, I was always seeing bits of paper floating by in the clear plastic part of our sewer system.  We changed to Scott's and haven't see the bits of paper since.  When we were in regular stix-n-brix homes, we always preferred, and used, Charmin Ultra Soft.  No longer as the manufacturer of the toilet we have cautioned against that brand.

I agree on the angel soft, used it a couple years, then decided to do the water soaking test on it. Not good. It didn’t dissolve much. So then I started buying different brands and testing them. Scott’s was the best!

We did the test on brands in 2001 and have been using angel soft ever since. We don't do the full bowl flush only a half bowl. We use liquid Rid-X every dump only a capfull and have had no problems since switching to that product. Get it at larger Wal-Marts.

From my understanding, Rid-X is primarily used in septic systems where there is sludge in the bottom of the septic tank and oily liquids at the top.  It is supposed to rejuvenate the bacteria in the tank, but I've also had a couple of people who worked on septic systems to say to never use Rid-X.

Another note is that manufacturers can change the "formulation" of their products, so the water-shake test needs to be performed every so often to insure that one's paper is still dissolving correctly.  We used Angel Soft from about 2011 to 2014.  When I flush the black tank, I let it flush with an open valve for about 5 minutes.  Then I close the tank valve for about 2 1/2 minutes, and follow that up with flushing again for another 2 1/2 minutes with the valve open again.  When we used Angel Soft, I would see the bits of paper even after a couple of those 2 1/2 minute sessions.  With Scotts, I never see bits of paper, so I'm only having to do the 2 1/2 minute cycles once.
