Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Santa Fe, NM suggestions

My better half and I are travelling out to Mesa Verde, CO in early June.  On our return trip I'd like to spend a few hours in Santa Fe doing the tourist thing before we start meandering back east.

Any suggestions on parking the RV (30' Class C) and doing a walking tour in the downtown area?  (we don't have a TOAD yet)

Any "must see's" or best locales to peruse artesian wares?

Thanks!

I don't think there are any good places to park the rig in Santa Fe…at least close enough to actually do anything downtown. We were there a few years back and had to look for 30 minutes to find a place we could park at all…and that was with a Mazda 6. If we had been driving our truck we would have had to give up and go back to the campground.

If you do get there…make sure you try the Frito Chili thing that the drugstore downtown sells…they open a bag of Fritos, put in a scoop of chili and top with onions and cheese. Apparently it's a local invention by that drugstore.

In Texas "that chili thing" is called a Frito Pie and is served at most High School Sports events. It's REALLY good👌

In Indiana we call that chili thing a walking taco. Mostly sold at High school events.

Back to Santa Fe... it was back in the late '70s when we lived there, but our favorite things were the plaza, governor's palace, the La Fonda Hotel, and the Loretta Chapel with the "miracle staircase." If you're lucky enough to be there when the local Native Americans are displaying their wares on the plaza, that's really cool - and so is the Navajo flatbread. I think Neil and Connie are right about the parking, though. You could park in a shopping center on the outskirts and get an Uber or something.

Years ago friends stayed at a campground in town, I think it was Trailer Ranch looking at the map, and took the bus to see the sights.

Thanks to all! After the input and other research I'm probably going to make Santa Fe a day trip from the destination as opposed to an authorized delay enroute to our brick and mortar dwelling.

A couple years back we stayed at Santa Fe Skies which is on the edge of town and wasn't bad. We would probably stay there again if in the area. But without a toad it probably would be that great.

Mesa Verde is great!!

As for Santa Fe, back in 2009 we went from Oklahoma City to Pagosa Springs for a 2 week vacation with our Ford F250 and 26-foot fifth wheel.  I didn't plan well enough and missed seeing that there was a bypass on the west side of Santa Fe.  Silly me, I drove through "downtown" Santa Fe looking for a fuel stop.  I finally found a decent convenience store on my side of the road and got in and fueled.  However, I could see I would have a problem getting back out of the parking lot and onto the street.  Fortunately, two vehicles in the right places both left at the same time, giving me the room to make the turn to head for the exit from the store.

If there is ever a next time, I will always look for bypass roads as opposed to going through the main parts of cities/towns.

I would suggest a walk down Canyon Drive.  There are a number of places to shop there (besides the Plaza).  Places to eat: Check out The Shed (near the Plaza), Choclate Maven (on San Mateo Street) and Pasquale's.
