Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Trail Ridge Road

Howdy All,

This is my first post here on the RV Dreams Forum - I'm glad to be here! I've got a quick question for you guys.

I spent the past weekend up in Estes Park, Colorado with my family. Absolutely beautiful little mountain town. We stayed in one of the RV Parks and hiked in Rocky Mountain National Park for a few days.

One of my regrets from the trip was not going up Trail Ridge Road. It opened up for the first time this season the day we got there. My wife was goading me and telling me we should do it, but I'll be perfectly honest with you: I'm afraid of heights and I was really wary of taking my RV up such a winding and narrow road.

Does anyone have experience taking an RV up Trail Ridge Road? If so, is it treacherous or pretty manageable?

Thanks!

You can take an RV up Trail Ridge Road.  It's narrow but paved & the grade is not terribly steep, I think it is under 10%.  Tour buses drive on the road all the time.  It is narrow & there are drop offs on the side, but it's not dangerous.  There are lots of pull outs & a visitor center around halfway.  The views are utterly stunning, in my opinion.  It's well worth the drive!

BTW, I am afraid of heights too but I've made the drive many times.

You can take an RV up Trail Ridge Road, but if you don't like heights and ledges, you will be white-knuckling a bit.  The road is fantastic as far as quality and scenery, but I'd recommend driving a toad or tow vehicle for more enjoyment of the trip.

If interested, here is a link to our blog post of our Trail Ridge Road drive back on May 28, 2013.  We were also there early in the season when the road just opened.

If heights aren't your thing Trail Ridge probably isn't either. Definitely avoid independence pass, it's worse, much worse. I don't mind these roads but my wife does. I will never see these roads again.

We love Estes and have traveled Trail Ridge Road many times. We also stay in the campground just past the YMCA and hike into the park. I took our first motorhome up to the top and parked at the Alpine Visitors Center, in 1986. It started to snow so we made a quick trip back down. It is doable but I would prefer to take the car up. Make sure you have good brakes, use low gears and engine braking if you have it.
