Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
We are Sharon and Dick . We are still in our s&b home in Newaygo, MI. We recently purchased a 40 foot Durango Gold 5th wheel. We took it on it's maiden voyage to the 2015 Fall Rally at lake Leelanau. Looking forward to becoming full timers in 2016. Right now going through the tough job of down sizing. Dick is retired Air Force and I did 6 years so we plan to make use of military campgrounds as much as we can. We will be traveling with our two dogs and one cat.
Welcome aboard Dick and Sharon.
Just a question about the use of military campgrounds. Can anyone use them or are they for military people and veterans only?
Bernie, that just about covers admittance to such campgrounds. Foreign nationals are not allowed. Being a US Navy veteran I thought I might be able to utilize them as well, but my foreign nationality status prevents even me from using them. Oh well.

We are both military veterans, but not 20 year retirees and are not eligible to use these campgrounds. I think they should let all veterans use them. Pat and Charlie

Welcome, Sharon and Dick, from a fellow USAF retiree! We're on a plan to quit the second career and live our dream by October 2017. We would like to make use of our benefits by using military campgrounds as well - just not sure it will be feasible in our situation. We own a lot in an RV resort where we plan to spend the spring and fall of each year. When it gets to darn hot in Georgia we'll head north, and when it gets to darn cold, we'll head south or west. Unfortunately, those times will correspond with the "peak" seasons in the respective geographic areas, so we're not counting on being able to get in to those in high demand. Since you're heading out before us, I'll be interested to know how many you're able to use and how well they're being maintained, what with the budgetary constraints the services are experiencing these days.
For those questioning eligibility to use US military campgrounds, the following are authorized unlimited access to Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) programs. 1) Currently on active duty and their authorized dependents, 2) Retired from military service and their authorized dependents, 3) Honorably discharged with 100% service connected disability, 4) Medal of Honor recipients.
That link is not all encompassing as to sites in each state. For instance, they list a couple there for the USAF Academy, but I also know of one for the Army down on Fort Carson, about 15 miles south of Colorado Springs. However, I think it closes in the Winter.
My friend Larry has run a website on military campgrounds for many years, http://www.militarycampgrounds.us/. For those of you who qualify, it can be a great resource.

Montana is much more doable, but be prepared for temps down into the teens at night in October. They do not happen every year, but they do happen. This also applies to Wyoming and Colorado, since we hit the teens at night by Colorado Springs (Peyton) in mid-October one year.

Welcome ... we're (Ron and Janice) retired AF also and will be taking delivery of a new 381REF 2016 Durango Gold in a few weeks. We're not going full time ... yet ... but we're looking forward to exploring this new life style. Maybe we'll cross paths someday. Best of luck in your new adventure.
