Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
I've been "hanging out" here for a few months and finally decided to join.
My name is Suzie. I'm an accountant and Hubby is a retired firefighter. We've been talking about "doing the RV thing" for about 10 years. We were actively looking at it about 8 years ago and had a 2 year time frame. Hubby wound up getting a retirement job, so that cancelled/postponed "the RV thing". Turned out to be a blessing. My parents' health deteriorated (Dementia/caregiver) so it was a good thing that I was still in town to take care of them.
Fast forward a few years and we're back on track. Parents unfortunately are deceased (bless their soul's). Hubby has retired again. I have listed the majority of my business for sale and am talking with buyers. I'll keep a few clients that I can do remotely since the extra money will make life easier.
Hubby is now a writer and I'll continue being an accountant. That means two desks, four (at least) monitors, 3-in-one printer/scanner/fax, two desk chairs. Also good internet & cell phones. We'll live there but it's also a combined office.
We're planning on getting a travel trailer. Don't like the idea of two engines with a Class A and towed. Hubby won't fit in 5th-wheels we've looked at. He hits his head at the stairs to the BR. (6 ft, 7 in is a challenge!) We're going to the January 2016 RV show in Tampa to look at what's changed in the last 8 yrs. Hoping that with people getting bigger there will be more options. We plan to buy a new truck after we buy the TT. Truck seems much easier to find than the TT! And that way we know how big the truck needs to be.
We're planning on full-timing the RV but coming back "home" for a week every 4-6 months. Hubby will need to check on his parents and this will make dentist/dr appts easy. We plan to sell the "big house" and downsize to a condo. The condo gives us a hard address, gives us a place to stay when we come "home" and....(wife says most important )...gives us a place to keep our antiques (family inherited).
We need to do some work on the "big house" to get it ready to sell. I also need to be around for the transition of my business to the new owner. Early-mid 2017 is looking like the timeframe. (sell business, repair house, sell house, buy TT, buy condo, buy truck, sell junk, move into condo). Whew! Lots to do in about 18 mths!
I've learned a lot by reading books (Idiot's Guide) and the internet. Any input is deeply appreciated!
This might just work!
We're in AZ for a month while hubby writes about the Arizona Fall League (baseball). We're staying in a 1-BR condo and both working. We haven't killed each other!! We work in the AM, go to the game in the afternoon and then go out for an early supper. While the condo is much larger than a TT would be, it does let us know that we can both work in the same room, get a lot of work done and not bother each other. Cross question #1 off the list!
I had to laugh reading your post, but seriously hadn't thought that being in close proximity all the time could be tough. I think we will be fine here but it is definitely something for people to think about.
Working in close proximity was definitely a hot button for me. I worked from home about 15 yrs ago and had to get a "real office". He'd come home from work (firefighter... on 24 hrs, off 48) and want to get breakfast, go shopping, etc. Then early afternoon kept asking me questions. Now that he works from home, he gets it. We work differently. He likes dark and usually has a ball game on or is talking on the phone. I need light so I can see numbers.
Job #2 was a salary job for him. Now he understands that the work day doesn't end a 5:00 pm.
Yippee!!!! Item #1 on list is DONE!! I HAVE SOLD THE BUSINESS!!!
Now we have left...repair house, sell house, buy TT, buy condo, buy truck, sell junk, move into condo.
Now we're discussing leaving FL mid-Sept 2016 when the Florida State League (minor league baseball) finishes. We'd take about a month to get to AZ and be there in time for the Arizona Fall League. I'm thinking that we may not have the house sale/condo move portion finished by then.
