Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
this is a total newbie question. If I order a model with the options I want do I have to go thru a dealer? If so will they quote the MSRP ,and do we negotiate a sale price from there, before we actually purchase the unit?
Yes, the vast majority of brands require you to go through a dealer. As jayc said, the dealer can, in some cases, place a special order for you, if the manufacturer is willing to make modifications (different fabrics or colors, additional power outlets, etc.)
There are a few factory direct brands, like New Horizons, in which you deal directly with the manufacturer, but they are rare.
And yes, you negotiate with the dealer on price, make a deal, then they order the coach for you.

I recommend going through a dealer. If nothing else, the dealer could help one avoid mistakes when ordering. When we were looking at ordering, our dealer asked if we would be staying in places without full hookups. When we said "yes," he spoke of another buyer that had ordered an inverter with extra batteries just for that purpose. I hadn't even thought of that as a possibility, and after we replaced our Dometic RV refrigerator with a residential one, the inverter really became a valuable option.
When looking at dealerships, pay attention to whether the salesman is asking you questions about how you want to RV. If they aren't asking those questions, how could they possibly know what RV to recommend. The same applies to options as well as floor plans and construction details.

We ordered ours through the dealer and added some custom touches based on our needs. The dealer worked with the manufacturer to get the items we requested added (for a cost of course).
The manufacturer and dealer are both close to where we live so we were able to go and watch ours travel down the assembly line. Once we took delivery we would take the 5th wheel back to the manufacturer for service. We were able to get some additional custom features added plus have the axles flipped.

I would imagine most manufacturers would want to support their Dealer Network. IF they would all sell direct to the end user...................There'd be no need for the Dealer.
