Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Whole House Vacuum - my new favorite bug riddance appliance!

We are camped outside of the Sacramento area with lots of farms, orchards, agriculture areas around us, RV is backed up to a lovely little pond (owners call it a lake, but really, trust me it's a pond).  Went out to dinner last night with friends and came back to find our RV filled with 100's of little flying insects.  We've had a LOT of them around that past few days, learned to quickly open and close the RV door when coming and going, but nothing like this.  I swear they must have hatched under the RV and came in through every open window, vent, etc.  Last year we had a similar event and we got out the fly swatters, this year I was a bit smarter and used the long extension on my whole house vacuum and sucked up the vast majority of those little pests.   Scared our cat into hiding for a couple of hours, but at least we were sleeping in a bug free home.

Our whole house vac doesn't get used a lot, I've found it simpler and more efficient to have a small vacuum cleaner for the floor, but every time I think I don't need the whole house vac Mother Nature reminds me of it's most useful purpose, bug sucking!!

Bug sucking?  Sounds like a new Xtreme sport.  I can see it now, MarkS will be designing a radical tornado suction device driven off his Volvo engine for power to eradicate the devils. Heh, he'd irradiate rodents or napalm them so why would that be a stretch?biggrinbiggrinbiggrinbiggrin

LOL Brian, your suggestion is a little extreme.

Of course, last year when we were using the fly swatters and being a bit vocal in our frustration, anyone passing by and overhearing probably thought we were maniac bug killers.

However, knowing we'll have an art show in this area again next spring has me plotting on the bug killer I used to spray on our grass, when we had a house. Might just have to pre-treat the area around the RV when we arrive next spring.

We had to do the same thing when we were invaded with thousands of ants in Georgia. I also sprayed a shot of Raid into the vacuum just to make sure they didn't climb back out. The ants just kept coming though so we eventually sprayed the interior with raid (which I hated to do) and left for a few hours. The camp host said to get some Home Defense Spray then spray around the outside of the rig so I did and life was good again.

Be careful sucking up the stink bugs though! Lord I made that mistake in our cyclone vac and you could smell it everytime I started the vac for a while, even after I emptied the container and washed it! :)

Vacuums and bug sucking, an awesome sport.

A few years back we were up in Glendo WY.  We left the 5er there for awhile and were invaded by a herd of dive bombing Miller moths.  DW got the vacuum out and them puppies were sucked up in no time.  Life was back to normal.

 Ahem.....

.....take another look at those moths.  Do they look anything like my picture in my avatar?  If not, then you need to call them "Flippers."  I'm a Miller and I look nothing like those little critters.
