Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
Hubby and I will be leaving for our full time adventure in October, 2015. So we are Literally just months away! Here is my problem....I will be working my full time job from the road. This requires me to have a desk for my computer and printer and be able to work comfortably. Our RV has a set of theater seating (which my husband LOVES), a sofa on another wall - and next to the theater seating a dinning room table. We can not decide if we should take out the table to accommodate my desk, or the sofa. Husband is NOT a sofa user....but I am...I tend to lay on the sofa and watch TV. And I can honestly say - we NEVER use our dinning table at home. I think the last time we used it was maybe Christmas day?? LOL We always eat in the living room in front of the TV. So - does it make more sense to unload the table and put my desk there - or keep the table (nice looking in the rv) and pull out the sofa at the end of the fiver and put my desk there??? Soooo confused! And really don't have any place to store these items once we are on the road. Selling the house and don't want to have a storage place for items like this. What do ya'll suggest?

I'd suggest using the dining table for your "office." Also, I suggest using some kind of cover on the table so that should you trade or go to sell the RV, the table will still look nice. If you don't figure to sell the RV, then take out whatever works best for you. Also, by using the table, all the components are still in the RV if you do go to sell it. Buyers sometimes don't like having to replace items that were removed.
If we were to sell our Mobile Suites, we'd have to buy a couch for the rear of the coach because right now, that space is Jo's sewing center.

Thanks Terry! I LOVE that your Jo has a sewing center! I'm bringing along my sewing machine AND my surger! LOL Some things in life you just can't live without!

We removed the sofa to put a work bench in for my husband, our Mobile Suites came with a built in desk area that we added a pull out keyboard tray to, so I use that as my work area. While we don't use the table much for dining, we do use it for other projects, etc, plus the chairs are now our extra seating when we do have visitors since we no longer have a couch. We did buy a coffee table that has hinges on the top, so it raises up and we use that as our dining table frequently.
Rhandi, Like you, I love to sit or lay on the sofa. I would be very unhappy if I didn't have it for that. Also for when visitors come
there is that extra space to sit for conversation. We always eat in the living room with trays, and never use our dining table. In fact the table is just a clutter catcher which has to be cleared.
My vote is for removing the table that you wouldn't be using anyway. Use your space the way YOU want to and enjoy. Pat K

You're going to be living in this RV full-time, so you want to be comfortable. Get rid of the table, (give it away or sell it). You can always buy some kind of table to put in it's place if you decide to trade or sell the RV.
Be comfortable and enjoy the journey.

We removed our dining room table so that we could have more space. We bought a drop leaf table from Ikea that doesn't take up much space. It's used whenever friends come over to play cards.

We lived over 3 years in a 5th wheel and traded up for a Phaeton 40' MH in '11 and we live and travel full time. Our MH came with 2 couches and a booth dinette. My wife did not like the idea of a booth but we were ready to hit the road when we purchased the MH so thought we would try it for a year. It was a pain and I wanted a recliner so when we returned to Alabama we took out 1 couch and the booth dinette and replaced it with t free standing table that can be extended with a computer table and printer drawer pull out and 2 file drawers. The table and desktop over drawers match the existing counter at sink and stove. We also bought 2 euro recliners to replace the couch. We love this set up for us and it is good for resale. My wife uses the table etc. as her office and also usually eats there. I eat in my recliner which works good for me. My wife has an office chair . We carry no other chairs inside. If we have guests over we plan it so we can use a picnic table and for extra seating for games inside we use bag chairs. What works for one does not necessarily work for another so plan for what would work for you and best wishes to you. We have been traveling full time for 7 years and still love it.

Dream Reachers - I REALLY like what you guys did! What a great idea! Looks like the table will be the one to go. We can replace a table cheap - sofa not as much, and that way I will have my place to lay and watch tv! LOL Glad to know I'm not the only one that does that! LOL We are really excited to get our RV - and October can't get here soon enough!!!!

Ditto - when I sit in the dinette booth the table almost hits my chin. DH says the seats are too low for him. He's a foot taller than me and his knees get scrunched up. Not a good fit for either one.
We took our table out and replaced it with a desk but we have a storage unit. We are stationary for a few more years. I made my DH keep the table so if we decide to sell or trade in we can put it back in.
We removed one of the couches in our Front Living Room and turned it into a complete desk area. We also put in a real kitchen table (4 top) and I can use that as well. I work from the rig anf it is VERY important you have a comfortable space. Please don't forget about the chair. We spent so much time thinking about the desk spent little thinking about the chair and ergonomically the chair is of equal to greater importance. I put a link to show you our setup. It's right at the top of the blog post
It really all depends on what your likes, needs and comfort level is. I am a Virtual Assistant and require an "office." Before buying our rig (a Mobile Suites), we were looking at models that had bunks or toy haulers or some area where I could have a separate office. Not finding a floorplan I liked, I explored a separate desk. Well, we happened to find a fantastic deal of a rig & truck combo that was too good to pass up, but it did come with some compromises, such as my not having an office or a desk. However, it has a coffee table that raises up, so I can use that as a desk or to eat on while watching tv on the sofa. But more often than not, I use the dining table. We have storage under the chairs, so the chair next to me is like my desk drawer. And at the end of the day or at meal time, I just put the laptop on the seat next to me. In the kitchen, we have what looks like a breadbox cabinet, which is large enough to put our wireless printer.
All in all, I would say I'm very happy with this setup. I didn't think I would adapt after having my own office, but I did adapt very well. I hope you also find a solution that makes you happy!
