Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.


We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Genny problem?

We heard a strange noise - kind of like a cross between someone dry-heaving and coughing.  Upon closer investigation, we discovered the sound was coming from our generator -- an Onan 5500 and the sound was more like it was trying to start but not succeeding.  We are on electric and not using the genny at all.  We checked the inside switch and it is in the off position.

Any ideas what would be causing this?

The Theraflu didn't work; maybe I'll switch over to a codeine cough syrup (the good stuff)!

Seriously -- we shut all the switches on the generator off as well until we figure it out (so no further damage is done).  Thankfully we're not doing any boondocking right now; let's just hope the power doesn't go out in a storm!

I've heard of this. If I remember right, there's a harness that goes to the generator from your inside switches. There should be a connector near the generator. Check this connector for corrosion or moisture. If corroded, clean the best you can and then uses some silicone grease to keep any further moisture out. 

If you don't find anything there, or this doesn't remedy the problem, I'd advise disconnecting this connection until you can get it checked out at a Cummins / Onan service facility. (You can find them by doing a search on the web). 

You don't want that generator trying to start when it shouldn't.

Is the genny flashing any "trouble codes"Not sure if yours has that option)?? Could be a defective board in the auto-start(if that's what you have).
