Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Bedroom slide broken

I wonder if anyone else has experienced this...

We noticed that the bedroom slide was not closing flush on one side and brought it to a dealer (Tom Johnson in Marion, NC).  They said that the cause was from the bed, which is on a cantilever design.  It only has 1 ram, no tie to the other side of the slide to keep the room straight.  All of the screws and bolts have pulled out from the support structure and the bed is now pulling on the carpet.  The slide is twisting and pivoting around the bed.  Dealer seems to think this is all caused by a weight overload in the initial design (we have a washer/dryer in the closet on that side as well).

In order to fix this, they need to rebuild and redesign the supports around the bed and put rollers to support the front of the bed.

Has anyone else had this type of problem?

In my 07 Elite Suite (not a big SB design like yours) the bedroom slide came apart due to the bedroom slide detaching from the bed base. It was an easy fix consisting of running bolts between the bed base frame and the floor of the slide. I think this was a common problem with DRVs of that era. I understood that the problem had been rectified by 08-09. It was likely different from your situation but I bring it up as there was a known bedroom slide problem with DRV products. I think there was a bunch of discussion on the suites forum in 09 I think. I was able to head off my problem after seeing the online discussion.  When I looked at mine I could see the screws pulling out (under the bed) and breaking so I drilled a bunch of holes in the bed frame  and bolted the frame to the floor where the ram attached.  Good luck with your fix.............

Cheryl,

As mentioned over on SOITC's forums, you may want to have the repair folks check to see if your bedroom slide has a flow diverter.  On our 2010 MS 38TKSB3, the slide has two rams with a single line going to a flow diverter that then diverts the hydraulic fluid flow to both rams at once.  Some time ago on the SOITC forums, there was a discussion that when operating the bedroom slide, one should run the slide in or out without stopping in mid-operation.  It seems that stopping could affect the operation of the flow diverter.

What I don't know is whether your 2008 has a flow diverter.  Since our 2010 is a 38-footer instead of a 36-footer, we have a large bedroom slide that also includes the side by side washer and dryer units.

Thanks Terry;

You just answered (in a way) your own statement (heh.heh).  Our bedroom slide has only ONE ram, and thus no flow diverter to split the fluid to both rams.

We too have the sideXside washers.

I am quite frustrated about this new problem (yes, I know, even S&B's have issues, but this seems to be a DESIGN flaw, and thus frustration!

 Cheers.

Good news is we are only opening and closing the slide **Carefully**  5 more times until the dealer will be repairing it at the end of the month

Mitch,

Obviously, I've not seen your coach, but as mentioned over on SOITC, with regards to the bedroom slide, both rams aren't visible from outside like the other slides likely are.  With the bedroom slide, the second ram can only be seen from inside.  While I've never even looked for ours, I'm not even sure where I need to look for it.

Yeah, Paul. It seems that this has been a never ending battle of things going wrong. The rig came thru inspection with flying colors and seemed to have been in excellent condition when we bought it. I think the problem, really, is that it was used by the previous owner for vacationing, and then it was in storage for about a year. So we have been testing the 7 year old components to their limits by full timing in it and things that would normally wear out are doing so now. It's just scary that there's still so much we don't know that we don't know, so we don't know what to look for that might break down until it breaks! I'm thinking about metal fatigue as well.

I just have to keep reminding myself that this happens in a sticks & bricks house as well, and that I'm far from alone in things breaking down. I also have to count my blessings that this has all been big money, time and inconvenience, but thankfully no one has been hurt.

Amen on the no one hurt part.  Hopefully, some good Karma will start breaking your way.  I just hope that when we hit the road in August, we have as good a philosophical outlook as you guys do should things start going wrong.

Murphy's Law - things that can go wrong, will. Just always be prepared for the unexpected! If nothing else, it's helped me change my attitude from freaking out when things didn't go according to plan, to acknowledging that sometimes plans are made in bubbles and I just need to go with the flow.

Sorry, Terry.... getting of topic here.

Apologies, the 'off topic' is my fault.  I wish I had a solution to your issue, but I don't.

Best of luck and happier trails.
