Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Selling it all for the road

I am a forty something mother of 4.  2 in post-secondary and 2 at home.  My husband and I are looking to sell it all and go on the road.  We are in the preliminary plans for summer 2015.  The plan is to school the boys on the road while working online jobs (I'm a teacher).    We plan to travel the US historic and scientific sites, visit family and friends, and just see the world and give our boys the experience of a life time.  I am looking to hook with similar families to gain insight, advice, and support on our journey.

We don't have any children that will be going with us and you are well ahead of us as to when you plan to hit the road.  So far, RV-Dreams has been a wonderful place to gain insight, although several other forums have plenty of helpful people as well.  Good luck in your planning and welcome to the forums. I'm "over-planning" for our future in an RV but it's fun to dream.

There is a link below to our planning blog.  Although it is a work in progress which has just begun, you are welcome to whatever information we have listed.  Hope to met others that are just getting started (before we leave) in order to learn from them.

Use your rig's systems to teach the boys some basic science. Example, the electrical system, have them figure out routes of electricity for each appliance, use the multimeter to monitor systems, calculate the time the batteries can supply given amount of power, calculate how long it will take to recharge the batteries, etc. Have them use the GPS to determine travel routes, then calculate fuel consumption, figure out what the friction on the road is per tire, then for all of the tires, etc. Also get them involved in geocaching - it will help them explore each area and find out what the locals think are important places to visit.

Thank you.  I love planning.  I can sit and plan trips and events all day.  I like the idea of a blog, but don't feel comfortable putting it all out there.  I'm not private, just cautious.  I read some of yours and the financial information is very helpful.  Have fun!

I'm curious:

Is this for a year or two or a semi-permanent arrangement? What are your children's thoughts on the matter? What arrangements are you considering for your children's socialization needs?

We are going to take it one day at a time and see how that goes.  Our plan is to take it 6 months and them plan another 6 months and then see what we want to do from there.  Our parents all live in the Pittsburgh area so we will venture up that way in the spring and head north north east by next summer.

As for socialization of our children....They have been in public school and daycare prior and have plenty of socialization.  My older son is going to be in High school.  He has had enough public school socialization.  The little one is Mr. personality having been the youngest of 4 and coming from a big family, I'm not sure what kind of socialization he needs beyond meeting new people and making connections while we visit extended family and such.

I also hope to make some connections while we are out as well with other home-schoolers on the road.  I think it's going to be aweseome!  I can't wait!

Congrats Sissy and welcome to the forum. There are some families educating their kids on the road and it seems to be a great experience for the kids and parents. I love that your taking things day by day because frankly with any kind of parenting that's all you can do. 😊 Good luck with your planning and welcome again!!

Congrats Sissy70.....sounds like you're excited to go, and time will fly very quickly.  We'll do similar as you....our family is in Western PA also, so plan to visit that area with family in the spring and early summer and then head elsewhere for cooler times of the year.  That area of PA is not the place to be in winter :)  Good luck and hope it all comes together for you!

Contrary to what some people think I met several carnival families that were on the road almost all year long and had their children with them. They were staying at the RV park where I spent some time. They decorated their rigs and patios for the season, home schooled and organized activities for the kids. Those children were polite, well-behaved and very respectful of other people in the park. They also took very good care of their pets and cleaned up after them. To be honest I preferred their company to some of the other "vacation campers".

Wish you a great adventure.
