Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
We are heading south for the winter from southeastern Okla. and want to skip hwy 35 looking to go thru Paris Texas and head south. Want to stay at a couple of state parks on the way. Any Texans or others know of good state parks on the way south to Alamo try to split up 3 days of driving.
Returned a while back from northern New Mexico near Chama great place to stay if interested in southern Colo. Lake Huron I believe love New Mexico will be headed back next summer.
We like to go down US281 west of FT Worth. I would drop down to I20 near Mineloa and skirt Dallas to the south. There's several state parks close to 281 but not necessary on it. Here's just a few; Garner, Glen Rose, Colorado Bend, Ink's lake. Plenty of private parks park on 281 as well.
Thanks that is great route we used to ride bikes to the hill country in the spring are going to try to stay east of metroplex, and the other large cities Greenville east of Austin maybe Victoria we stayed in Three Rivers at a county campground last year don't want to travel that far this year.
We loved Tyler State Park, used to camp there regularly every fall and spring when we lived in Dallas, not sure how big rig friendly that park is, we were tent campers at that time in our life. We also found Lake Tawakoni a very nice place to stay with the exception of one weekend that started out as a peaceful weekend until the Boy Scouts arrived and filled the 8 sites on all sides of us. Now, before I get any negative comments, I have no issue with the Boy Scouts or any other organized camping activities for kids, just made for a less than peaceful weekend.
I think there's also a COE campground in that area SE of Paris, haven't stayed there but have friends who have enjoyed that area.
Dale Ruth,
Thanks for the input about Tyler and east Texas right now the plan is thru Sulphur Springs hwy 19 to Mexia and stay at Fort Parker a state park for a couple of days. Another stay on the way to south Texas at another state park Goliad for another couple of days then on to Alamo area.
We Texans usually require one of two things for Okies to get across the state line. A passport or plenty of money to spend.
I'd also recommend 281. It's an excellent road for RVing. I prefer COE parks over state parks; especially, since the state parks charge an extra $4-7 entry fee on top of CG fees. Be that as it may, Blanco State Park and Inks Lake are along that route and are nice. There are several COE parks from Ft Worth to San Antonio. They are around Whitney Lake, Benbrook Lake, and Canyon Lake. If it works into the schedule for the day, lunch/dinner recommendations would be the Blue Bonnet Cafe in Marble Falls and Red Bud Cafe in Blanco. If you have time, and haven't done it before, I also would suggest a tour of LBJ ranch. A good commercial CG near there is called Peach Country RV Park. You should take the loop around San Antonio because 281 goes thru town. You can reconnect south of town.
Happy Trails.

I hope to I will be able to cross the red river one more time to enjoy your wonderful state for the winter. I do have one of the requirements for travel in Texas I am sure you may be able determine the item. I also enjoy hwy 281 especially Marble Falls for travel to the hill country and rivers. The reason we are trying to stay east of hwy 35 to have a slow relaxing drive and miss the traffic due to entering the state on hwy 271. Why does Texas charge for camping and entry fee kind of double dipping?
"Why does Texas charge for camping and entry fee kind of double dipping? "
The camping fee goes straight to the state (VERY little of it is for use at the park). The entry fee is dedicated to the park where it is used as upkeep and maintenance.
