Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Verizon Double your data through Oct 31, 2014

After AT&T reacted to T-Mobile with their double your data for the same price promotion, then Sprint reacted to AT&T, and now Verizon has also reacted.  Any Verizon More Everything plan of 15GB or more is doubled, so 15GB becomes 30GB, etc.

I did a bit of arithmetric, determined that we could move to More Everything from our old plan, upgrade to 30GB of data and cancel our Millenicom for the same total price, with some extra taxes expected.  Well, since my mother's basic phone is out of contract we got 40GB for $10 more, plus whatever the tax difference will be.  A done deal, with a new 5510 hotspot, unlimited voice and texts, and our phones can also work as hotspots when needed.  Now our arsenal will be a 40GB Verizon More Everything plan and an AT&T hotspot with 5GB for $50 ($51.69 with taxes).  The Elkhart, Indiana Verizon store will get credit for the sale and it was an easy sale.   The hotspot did cost us $50, the free one only works in 4G and we need it to be able to downgrade to 3G and 1X.

Since we paid for our Millenicom through this month we will have 65GB to play with in October.   I am sure Millenicom is not happy, this deal will undercut them if people also have smartphones with Verizon.

30GB is $130, data only, 40GB is $150. It used to be 15GB for $130, 20GB for $150. Come November 1st, they are supposed to go back to the old prices.  You still have the per device charges, $40 smartphones, $10 tablets and $20 for hotspots. Millenicom is $90 for 20GB, my old Verizon plan was $150 before taxes for a combined total of $240 before taxes (about $18). Now my Verizon bill is $270 before taxes for 40GB of data on phones and a hotspot. I could save $20 a month if I used the phones as hotspots instead of a dedicated one.

Ok.. I get it... and got it..

Upgraded my plan to the 30gb..

I guess I'll use one of our phones for now.. Will look into a verizon hotspot in a minute..

My cell bill was 145 w/ 4gb.. plus the 90 from millenicom.. .. so I was $235..

Now $210 plus some fees.. $225 i'd guess.. so $10 less , 6gb more .. and direct with Verizon.. I like it. About time they stepped up..

I will hold the Millenicom hot spot as a back up plan, if needed. ..

Thanks for the post!! Saved me some money, and better service.( my opinion, sorry )

I was online today and my "old" 20GB plan was no longer even offered. I upped to the 40GB for the same price I was paying for the 20GB. We have 2 Iphone 6Plus and 2 Iphone 5C....so 40GB should be enough. From what I was reading online, it seems as though most carriers may be trending back to the unlimited data plans. The more people use, the more money they get....and can you imagine the amount that would be used if everyone had unlimited again...especially with being able to use mobile phones as WiFi hotspots now. Fingers crossed that this is what we have to look forward to. Makes me sad that I switched from Verizon 3 years ago while I was grandfathered into the unlimited plan. I did read though, that those on those unlimited plans still were getting their service tethered back after so much use. Not sure if that is really the case but one can wonder.

Just a quick note to VETERANS, and ACTIVE DUTY PERSONEL. Verizon just last month gave me 20 % discount on my Verizon bill excluding taxes ofcourse after sending them a copy of my DD Form 214 to prove I was a Veteran. Just search for military or veteran discount on Verisons website.

Yup.. October seems to be the month of the data wars :)

Three major carriers doubling the data, and Verizon announcing they won't be throttling LTE unlimited plans after all.

Verizon Cancels Plans to Throttle “Unlimited” LTE!

Competition Rocks: Verizon & Sprint Join AT&T in Doubling Data

Promotion: Get Double the AT&T Data on Mobile Share Value Plans

We have a call into Millenicom as well to see how they might be responding to these deals, and will report back if they make any changes.  A lot of folks considering going direct with the carriers as a result. Certainly makes sense for those that use the data.

All and all.. a big win for us RVers. :)

 - Cherie

PS. if you want to sell your Pantech 291, there may be a market for them on eBay and such. Seems the hotspot has been discontinued and no longer carried by Verizon or Millenicom.

Hmmm, double data, if I have data at 15GB it becomes 30.  If I drop satellite at 90/mth and buy 25GB for an additional 40/mth (saving the remaining 50 for other stuff) then double it too, I how have 80GB a month to stream all the netflix, hulu+, live network stations, etc I want. Not enough? I could use all the remaining 50 to buy another 20GB and double it for a total of 120GB a month. WOW! And we aren't even on the road yet. Looking very good by the time we get the party started.smilesmile

Satellite is in real danger, with these increased data limits and improving coverage.

Pantech has filed for bankruptcy, so even though the 291s are really nice, there is a good reason they are getting scarce.

My experience so far is the 291L and 5510L are very similar in operation, speed and antenna quality. The onscreen menus are very similar, their web interfaces are similar (I changed the SSID and passcode on both), both have usage, speedtests have been very close, and they seem to have similar antennas and show about the same bars in the same places. The 291 has Wifi Protected Setup (WPS), which I don't want, the 5510 does not have it, which is better from a security viewpoint. Since Pantech, the maker of the 291, is in bankruptcy, replacement batteries and units have been hard to come by. The 5510L is a Novatel MiFi unit, a solid company and you can buy one directly from Novatel Wireless for about $120, since I got a pop up on their website. The 5510 is 4G only, the 5510L also does 3G.

So somebody give me a ballpark price..
2 smart phones that we already have
the pantech291 with a 30g limit

Currently our verizon is around 170 with a 5g pplan and 3 smart phones but we need to drop 1 line anyway so that would change.
Then the 90 to millenicom.

Is the Verizon plan going to be equal or any cheaper?

Alie and Jim: I think Bill Adams quoted $230 on the SKP forum and that sounds right. If any of your phones are out of contract, ie., over two years old, you get a $10 to $20 break. There will also be taxes and fees, but those vary by your address.

Verizon took over the accounts, they did not take over Millenicom.
