Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
Will be taking ownership of a new fifth wheel about 6 months before retiring. After retiring will become South Dakota residents and registering vechicles, etc in South Dakota as we will become full timers. Sales tax, registration and insurance is much lower in South Dakota than in home state. Should I just become a South Dakota resident 6 months before retiring when I take possession of the new RV and register the RV right away in South Dakota, and change over existing vehicles and drivers license 6 months before retiring ?

After I weighed all the differences and hassle... between Fl and SD.. There was not alot of money differences..
I'm curious as to how much money you are really saving.. after going up there and everything.. Maybe I am missing something? I plan to do FL this week or next.
I know you can register the rv in SD without going there. But drivers licenses , you have to go there.
It does not matter when you do it.

The big problem with registering in SD six months early is that your current state may suspect that you are trying to dodge taxes, and most states take a dim view of that. I think I'd rather either wait until you are ready to "move" to SD or just pay the taxes in your current state.
The registration on our MH was up at the end of April, and our auction was early April. Had the property sold at the auction, I would have immediately registered the MH in SD. Since the place didn't sell, I re-upped in MO. I "might" have gotten away with it, but I'd rather not play legal games. The penalties would have probably been only two or three times what I would have saved.
Why SD over Florida? Are you going to live there, or just domicile? If you're not on Medicare yet, be sure to check out the medical insurance situation in SD.
So far as we have been able to tell, SD isn't much cheaper than FL for domicile, if any. And the medical insurance situation appears to be a lot better here, at least for RVers.
In either case, I would just pay the sales tax and register in FL. If it appears that you are engaging in tax evasion it can get expensive. Penalties and interest.
where are you now? Texas is a good state also for full timers.

Congrats on the retirement! :)
x2 .. yep thats what I fiqure....
SD sales tax was 3% ... Fl is 6% where I will register.. on a 100k.. 3k.. isn't worth the hassle and time, and effort..
