Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Refrigerator - LP or electric?

I don't have the model available at the moment (in a 2008 DRV Mobile Suites) but hopefully this is a generic question ---

There are 2 modes to run it: LP and Auto.  I assume when on Auto, it means the refrigerator decides whether it's running on gas or electric.  Is there a way to determine exactly how it is running while on auto?

I ask because while in the driveway for the past month, the RV has been hooked up to house power (15amp), with the only item turned on being the frig.  Yesterday, Mitch needed to work in there for a while and needed to put the a/c on.  Since the house power isn't strong enough, he turned on the generator.  It would not start right away, and he determined the LP tank was out of gas (he switched over to the 2nd tank and it started up just fine).  This seems to indicate that the frig has been running on LP all this time.

Thanks!

Assuming it is a Dometic of more or less recent manufacture:

There are two little LED lights in the readout panel many times at the very top of the fridge

If the light by Auto is lighted then the fridge is in automatic and is on electric

If the light by Auto and by LP is lighted then the fridge is in automatic but running on LP

If the light by LP is lighted, but not the light by Auto, then the fridge is running on LP only and it will not switch to electric even if the LP quits.  This occurs only in the manual mode.

BTW, the brand or model of the RV the refrigerator is in seldom has anything to with how it operates.  Just saying that for general information to indicate the brand of rig is seldom helpful as to how appliances work.  All types of RV manufactures use different brands and models of refrigerators in their rigs and they change from year to year.

You can go around the outside of the rv too.. if the exhaust is hot.. it's in propane mode.

On the outside of the rig, where the refrigerator is installed there will be a plastic vent cover about 12" x16" +/-. It has 4 square locks, 1 in each corner. Use a screw driver & give them a 1/4 turn & remove the cover. Inside should be a 110 volt outlet, just like inside you unit. A cord should be plugged into that outlet. If not, look around for it & plug it in. That's how it will run on electric. A friend of mine had a travel trailer for several months. We were together on a trip through eastern Canada in September. While in a park in Montreal, he told me he needed propane. I was surprised because we both topped off our tanks before leaving Minnesota and we hadn't used much propane to that point. I looked in the panel I just described & the cord was disconnected when he received it from the dealer in June. He had gone through a lot of propane.

Good luck. Let us know what happens.
