Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
I still hate Walmart but like many RVers we do regularly shop there in spite of my feelings. Saw a TV news report this morning about his tool that does the checking of competitive pricing for you and automatically rebates the difference. According to the report Walmart missed on about 60% of the items they purchased that they knew were advertised elsewhere on sale. When reporters called Walmart they were working on improving the function And credited the difference.
Might be valuable as time goes on. Please do your own research.
Sherry

the problem with the system is that your have to register to use it....they track your buying....your personal preferences...and add you to there data base.
to get the better price you have to give in to the intrusion into your life and there right to use that information with there affiliates.
we are systematically becoming part of the system letting someone else making the decision for us.

its not so much the tracking that bothers me........its the endless spam that ends up coming on the computer from them for participating.........the tele-marketer's that now call the phone you use to scan it......and all the junk mail my mailbox gets............not to mention all of their affiliates
I dont mind them selling me something, but their advertizing should not be at my expense..
if they want to give me the lowest price all the time.......they should just do it .

I don't necessarily need or want one more company with my email address to blitz me with ads, special offers, etc. so probably not something I would sign up for at this time. I have enough junk in my email inbox.
I did have to chuckle about the "taking advantage of WalMart" and staying there for "free"!! OK, yes it's free black top camping but our last WalMart stay was over $100 by the time we left the store with a few groceries, paper goods, DEF, Fuel treatment, etc, etc. Then we were happy to see that Gas Buddy showed they had the cheapest diesel in a 100 mile stretch of I-10 so yet another $150 to WalMart for fuel. That was one expensive one night stay!!! Yeah, they benefit from RV'ers staying in the parking lot buying groceries or other necessities of life.
I stay at Walmart alot.....and your right , by the time I journey thru the store add a few groceries ,pick up that nice shirt that was on sale and all the other things that come about .......Im just another customer parked in the lot!!

This is really interesting for me because we really dislike Walmart. Lee and I are known for never shopping there and may at times have even called them the devil :) That being said they do have tremendous deals and lots of camping items it is difficult to find reasonably priced anywhere else. I really appreciate their camper friendly policies. So I am in a quandary...once we are living on a strict budget will we shop there?? Will we stay there?? I will say I do appreciate what they have done with prescription drugs and how they have fought big companies to lower drug prices. I also appreciate the way they are fighting back in china about the manufacturer being responsible for the quality of the goods produced rather than the seller...so I don't know. I believe someone said .."never say never" and even though I have banned them from my buying practices for the last 15 years I may soften.
If Walmart has a tool that will help me save money when/if and I repeat when/if I shop there, I'm okay with that. If it requires that I provide certain info that they want to collect that is a separate issue and learning my shopping habits is not a reason for me to say no. In this information age we live in, Walmart or anybody else can already get whatever info they want on my habits for a price. I can even make it easier for them too if that is my choice. Nothing Walmart can do is going cause me to make a change in my purchase habits unless it is in my financial interest to do so. If gathering info helps them price their wares so that I will indeed buy from them sobeit. Companies have always gathered info on their customers, these days it has just gone high tech.
As to taking advantage of you, if that is beyond your comfort zone, that is okay. I would remind you that the you under no legal obligation to buy anything from Walmart if you "wally"dock although many on here fairly enough trade a place to stop the night with making some kind of purchase. It's a win-win. Walmart has correctly decided that it is no skin off their nose to offer the "free" overnight parking as an inducement to garner sales, that is their right. However many communities are now attempting to ban the practice but that also would be a subject of a different thread.
To each his/her own. Caveat Emptor. Each has to live with their own ethical decisions. There is no absolute right or wrong here.

We learned to be pragmatic about this kind of thing. As an idealist, I can have problems with Wal-Mart and other stores. But, we shop at Wal-Mart, and Target, and lots of other places that an idealist would not shop at. We actually seek out Wal-Mart to get their multi-grain chiabatta rolls as burger buns, no one else has better ones and they are found at most Supercenters. Lately they have also had higher protein cream cheese, rare in other stores.
I do know fulltimers who try to exclusively buy only at Wal-Mart, especially food. I don't get that, especially since we find lots of food chemicals and low quality meats at Wal-Mart.

With Windows 8.1 I get 50 thousand pop-up ads on every site, even this one. If I block all pop-ups then I cannot access many sites. Google is even worse. We are victims of the advertising age and there's nothing we can do about it if we want to stay connected. WalMart has many hateful practices but it does provide many products at lower prices, including the medications that keep me alive. Those of us that squeeze pennies have to face that fact. Staying in a Wally parking lot is not moochdocking, it's parking where we shop.

Dyana,
Maybe it is just us, but we have Windows 8.1 and don't have any problems with pop-up on most sites. Absolutely none here on RV Dreams. Maybe you have other settings you could change? I'm not the computer guru around here, but maybe some others might help. Would another browser make a difference? I use Firefox from Mozilla.

We are far from Walmart fans ourselves but do shop there now and again. It just makes sense once and away. I'm sure we won't be signing up for the program however.
We have been on the road almost 2 years and have never stayed at a Walmart parking lot yet. Maybe we haven't lived yet LOL!!
Dyana: Sounds like you have some helper apps that got installed somehow. Install https://www.malwarebytes.org/ and run it to get rid of them.
My recommendation is to run Google Chrome or Firefox with the free add-on, Adblock Plus, to keep the ads down. For those running cellular internet, those ads take a lot of bandwidth.

Thank you, Bill. Those little pop-ups are very annoying. I'm not thrilled with 8.1 and I hope I can work through its bugs. Last night it wiped off half of my "favorites" and I still have to use my old computer to access my work sites. Frustrating is a mild word for what I would like to say about it.
Well, If you live in a small town or rural area you would be thankful for Walmart. It may have practices that aren't the best for our country but we would be in a pickle if we had to depend on the costly mom & pop stores in our area. I shop there and I will spend the night in there parking lot if needed. Free enterprise. Isn't it grand.
Wal-Mart love it. When we have been out boondocking for a few weeks in the back country. And getting low on supplies my wife will remark that she is having Wal-Mart withdrawal. and sure enough when we head for town Wal-Mart is our first stop
