Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

30 ft vs. 35 ft fifth wheel

Looking to full time for a couple of years  and was originally looking at a 30 ft fifth wheel.  Was thinking 30 ft. For maneuverability and less weight and easier to tow.  Would a 35 ft fifth wheel be that much more cumbersome and difficult to handle than a 30 ft?   We are just starting in the rv world . Any help would be appreciated.

5' more in the overall length won't make that big a difference. Depending on the 2 models chosen its adding 2.5 feet in front of and behind the axles. I have found that a longer trailer is easier to back than shorter trailers as well.

For full time especially you will appreciate the 35' fiver and it will not be any more difficult to handle. Don't let that bother you.  Lots of towing and parking experience speaking here.  It will also have, all things being equal, more storage space which you will need and that means trailer weight.  Chevy 3500HD / Ford F-350 / RAM 3500HD all are good choices for a tow vehicle and you most likely won't have to worry about the trailer weight if you are in the 35' range with most of those trucks.  Select the trailer, then the truck is always a good plan.

Go to RV Shows and look.  Sit in the trailer and think about actually living in it. Same for the bed and bath area.  How will I like this floor plan?  Make sure it works for you and your style.  Don't let the salesman tell you "everyone does this or that."  The selection needs to fit you, not anyone else.

This is a process and this is a good and friendly place to get information.

Bill

Thanks for responding. I know we will appreciate the extra space once where set up, and I agree the extra five feet probably won't make a big difference towing. Just concerned about tight roads and campgrounds being a problem at first. Originally wanted to stay small for convience traveling, not sure if this is good thinking on a smaller unit, double guessing myself. The extra storage and amenities will be appreciated at the camp site. Hoping to stay at locations for until we get tired of the area, we will be retired and not in any rush to hurry to the next place. Also do not plan on traveling more than 2-3 hundred miles at a time. This I believe may justify going 5 ft bigger. We have been following the forum and are learning a lot from all the experienced full timers. Still a lot for us to learn.

I also agree that you'll like the extra interior space. That's why we got our 37' instead of a 34' last year. It's not just the room to move about, it's also the storage space. Maybe a little more weight, but most of what hits mileage is towing that big barn door down the road, no matter how long it is.
