Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

We are looking forward to RV dreamin'

Hi everyone, I’m glad to meet you all.

My husband Jim and I are in the gathering information stage.  We are looking at purchasing a used truck and brand new 5th wheel to live in full time, so we have lots of questions as we have had neither.aww

We are middle aged, quite a ways from retirement, but we are yearning for the nomadic lifestyle. Jim works as an IT consultant and can work from anywhere so having some income isn’t a problem, however we want to be frugal and the RV life is our goal.

Right now I’m doing research towards our goal of being in the RV in 1 year.  I am hoping this forum is a good place to hear what others have learned and to glean knowledge of best brands, pitfalls and pluses of buying an RV. We are newbies to RVing, although I’ve camped a lot, Jim has not.

We lived in the OH/ MI area most of our lives and raised 3 children there. Moved to Dallas for a job, got rid of the big house in Michigan and have lived in a small apartment ever since.  So it’s handy that we have experience at downsizing our possessions and living with less. I love to organize and living in 720 sq ft now is good training - I am paring down possessions and getting streamlined. I’ve even made lists by room (we now have living room, kitchen, bedroom, bath) of what we absolutely need to keep and what can be let go.

Originally we both were interested in the small house movement, where you build a house around 1,000 sq ft or little less… but here in Texas there aren’t many people building small. Most people are building new around 3,000 sq ft on average. Jim and I are both opposed to living beyond our means, in more home than we need, and we try to be green too, so another house isn’t what we want. Last month we attended our first RV show together, and this month is another one. We are narrowing down our choices and weighing the options. We have also been going around to dealerships to ask questions and get more advice.

As soon as we are debt free we are making our dream of full time living in an RV a reality. We hope that to be a year or less from now so this gives us a good time to learn all we can from people who are fulltiming, like you all here.

Thanks for your help!

Welcome to Melissa and Jim.

We've been living in our Mobile Suites now for almost 3 years, and while I won't say we are "green," we are "greener" than we were in a regular home.

Considering the temperature possibilities in North Texas (we are in Oklahoma City), it can get pretty cold there, so if you are going to be sitting in one place for some time, be sure and find an RV that is well built and well insulated.  As for his IT business and working from home, he should be fine as long as you are in the cities.  It gets more spotty when one gets out into more rural areas.

The folks here have a lot of knowledge about both RV's and the RV lifestyle, so feel free to ask questions to learn as much as you can.  If there is some uncertainty, don't rule out the possibility of buying used so that one doesn't lose so much in depreciation on the purchase of a brand new RV.  We went with brand new because we wanted to order a coach that was "made for us" with the extra options that we felt were necessary.  Our researching of RV's took us 2 years, but we were also looking at both motorhomes and fifth wheels.

Oh, and let me add that as I researched, I found that there was a whole lot that I didn't know (and still don't) about "camping," even though the wife and I have been camping for years, and my camping goes back to when I was very young and our family camped in tents for starting.

Welcome. The small house movement is really cool. We looked on the web at designs that started around 400 square feet. RVing is nothing more than a small house but you can change the view out the windows on a whim. You will find all the info you need here.

Welcome! We've been members for a year now and have learned quite a bit. We hope to be out this summer and have also met some really great people! Can't wait to put faces to names at the rally. You should consider attending one if you can.

Welcome! Like you, we're not retired, but have been FT for 7 months now and loving this nomadic life. Dallas is one place we will be this year for part of the spring, but leaving before it gets too hot.
