Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Time to GO

Wow!

Its been 7 months since we moved into the 5th'er.  5 months since moving to Twin Lakes resort in NC.  And tomorrow we make our first move.

Huntington Beach State Park south of Murrells Inlet South Carolina is our first stop.  Then on to visit friends and family across Georgia and Alabama.  A long haul to South Dakota the week after to change our residency, then on to Texas for the winter.

Everthing packed, everything clean, everything ready to roll.

For all the blogs, all the websites, FORUMS, and questions answered,

Thank You for helping us make this a reality!

See ya down the road,

Jim & Alie

Its only for 2 days Bill. I'll blow the lines out before we head that way. Add a little pink stuff to the tanks and we're good. We travel with 2 cats in the 5'er so we put the furnace on its lowest setting anyway.
But yea, we'll be the nuts moving north from warm Alabama sunday.bleh

Jim, if you do not mind me asking, what made you choose South Dakota over Texas for residency? For us it was a "toss up" and we finally chose Texas because our birthdays both fall in the winter and we figured it would be more practical for us to get driver license renewed in Texas during the winter months.

Rick & Janice - I know you asked this question of Jim, but we also chose SD over TX, even though we have family in TX so will be there once a year. Annual inspections on vehicles, CDL required if over 26K were among our deciding factors. Insurance was also less expensive for us in SD.
SD will allow a 6 month extension on your license renewal so while I also have a winter Birthday, we'll most likely go through there in the spring.

Hey Ruth, hope your travels are going well and Dale is having great art shows. But, I'd like to clear up your comment about the CDL required if your vehicle is over 26000 lbs in Texas. You actually need a non-CDL Class B license with an air brake endorsement (if air brake equipped). It requires an easy 20 question written test and a driving test in your motor home. They will ask a few questions about how your air brakes work for that endorsement. As for the driving part, there's no backing up or parking required, they just make sure you can handle the coach and not drive over any curbs. The non CDL doesn't have any big fees associated with it.

FYI, we have a motor home friend who was stopped west of Ft Worth by the Highway Patrol just to check his license and registration, yep he got a ticket, over 26000 lbs and no class B, he's got one now though. There are a couple places in Texas that are strict on laws and this is one of them.

Sorry to get off topic but I thought the Texas resident drivers should know this.

Thanks for clearing that up Red. But we still would have gone with the same choice. I'm just now, after we sold my car a little over a month ago, getting comfortable driving the truck. I have not yet towed, that's one of the next things for me to learn. We would have been waiting a long time to get our new licenses.

Your Basically correct.......seatbelts , helmets are considered State safety violations and are only enforced within state boundries.........now drivers lic. criteria and vehicle registrations are protected by inter & intrastate pacts where whatever state you are in must abide by the issuing domicile state rules.   (this does not apply to moving safety violations)

That is the basic jist of it...........its like any other law , its there but it has 3 volumes for each rule

No kidding about the wait, I took the written on the spot and had to wait 6 weeks for the driving part.  I actually got mine because I was afraid if something happened the insurance might not pay.

Just so I understand the licensing issue, where one decides to domicle as well as what kind/size of their rig, is what determines what endorsements your driver license needs?  So, if I have a PA driver license and they don't require any special license, even if I get pulled over in Texas I would be ok, right?  I mean, not to sound like an idiot, but I know one is expected to follow the rules and laws of that state, motorcycle helmets come to mind for example.  Even if you have a PA driver license, (you are allowed to ride without a helmet here) and you are driving through a state that requires one, you better have a helmet on your head or you will be ticketed.

Can someone clarify this please?

I dunno…we were there the first week in Feb of 2012 to do our residency stuff and from DC to Rapid City and back we were pretty much in long sleeve T-shirt weather the whole week. Of course; it snowed 2 feet the next week but we got lucky.

Holly crap its cold here. Hasn't been above freezing in Souix Falls since we got here Monday (11-11-13).
SD has no state income tax, 3% vehicle tax, easy online renewal for plates and DL. Tomorrow we will find out about health insurance for me, (wife already on medicare). All I can say is its currently cold here...

Made it down to Emporia Kansas today. Had a nice headwind the whole way down here. Had a terrible headwind all the way up to Souix Falls as well!
Tomorrow well get into TX. Probably make it to Sanger before calling it a day.
Slowly getting warmer as we move south. After Friday, I don't want to see or drive on another Interstate highway again...

To Jims Carilite,   We just came home Wednesday after driving to Sioux Falls and did the residency thing, getting our DL,mailbox etc.  We may have been there at the same time.    It was cold!   We spent our first night in Rochester, Mn and woke up to an inch of ice on the car.   We did it all quickly, spending just the one night in SF and about 29 hours of time there.  We arrived Nov 13 and left the 14th.

Are you returning to the state you have lived in, may I ask?

We are in Wisconsin and still need to sell our home before we head off FTing.   We hope all goes ok with this SD residency.   We are getting Medicare supplement policies from local agency we have dealed with for years but they have license to sell in SD as well as WI and other states.  It begins January 1.
