Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
I used to live in Texas for 18 years but am now in SoCal., I really loved TX. and that is part of the reason Tx. looks so appealing to me as a Domicile. Of course it doesn't hurt that they don't have a state income tax, and the Escapees have a way to set it up so that your address makes you a legal resident, and I have heard that they have an excellent mail forwarding service.
Now enter Obamacare and it has muddied the water for me, when I look into medical insurance in California I find that because I have been unemployed for a while I qualify for Medi-Cal which is free, but only as a resident of Cal.. I don't think Tx. has a "Medi-Tex" lol.
So now I need to do more research to see if having Cal. as my residence would be the way to go, since Medical insurance would be my biggest expense on the road. I hope to FT it and be a workamper.
Of course all of my friends live in Texas, so I can't think of a better excuse to go back there once in a while.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Roger

First of all, I guess you probably realize that places change drastically in growing areas of the country so what you remember about a place won't necessarily be the "updated" version. We left the Tucson area and were gone for 3 years and when we went back, it was SO different and the same with the town where my husband grew up. I'm thinking the Medi-Cal is Medicaid and I know that like KS, TX is not setting up the exchange and not expanding Medicaid. We have a son, adult with DS, so he gets Medicaid, which we rarely have a need for, and this could be an issue with care on the road unless he has an emergency. We aren't concerned since we use herbal and homeopathic medicine. Medicaid does have an income limit. Make sure you research online very carefully and don't take word-of-mouth on what state requirements are. Read and make copies of what applies to your situation.
Be sure to check to see what coverage you get while outside of CA with Medi-Cal. A lot of us are finding that the options offered through the exchanges in many states have very limited provider networks, and offer not much more than emergency care while outside of the state.
Also do your research as to how workamping might affect your eligibility for the program.
Lots of decision points and research, and good for starting that process now :) And ACA is definitely going to have an impact on choice of domicile for many.
Good points, I have started my research...I have already applied thinking the bureaucracy would take forever to go thru. To my surprise when I checked on the status I had been told I was approved for Medi-Cal beginning 01/2014.
Guess I can always turn it down or not use it.
