Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Help

Hello world of RV'r . My wife and I are two newbees to this world and at this time are actually contemplating on buying a truck and a 5th wheeler but we need to get lots of help from experience people who have been here, done that, made mistakes and learn yet are will to give advice to assure people like us don't get raked over the coals, sold a bag of goods and fall into maybe the same traps you may have fallen into. So lets just start with asking for advise on what truck I should buy and what 5th wheeler is best and I'm think 5th wheeler first since that will dictate what size truck I need to pull it without fear of being under sized, burning up the motor and transmission and running gear. I am one of those people who prefer to have a two vehicle that'll far exceed what is needed to do the job. So with that I'd like to hear about how to do this, where to go and what is best. Hope I did this correctly and if I didn't please move my post to the correct location. Thanks Ervin and Jennie

I'm looking forward to some valuable information that'll save me a lot of headaches in the future. What ever I get I need it to last at least ten years since that'll be right about the time when the eyes go bad and a lose my drivers license.

Ervin and Jennie,

First of all, welcome to the RV Dreams forums.  You will find this to be a source of a lot of information from a lot of folks who do have answers for your questions.  So, feel free to ask away about any aspect of RV's and the RV'ing lifestyle.

You are certainly approaching the idea in the correct way by deciding on a trailer before choosing a truck.  However, with regards to helping choose a fifth wheel, most of us would likely need to know how you plan to use it and where.  If you would be likely to be in hot places when it is hot or cold places when it is cold, you would probably want a four season unit.  Also, if you plan of full-timing in your fifth wheel, you might want to make sure that the manufacturer doesn't "void the warranty" if one is full-timing.  There are a few that do that.

Will your RV'ing be for a long term period, or do you plan to only do it for a few years and then quit?  Our plans are to live in our fifth wheel for quite some time (years, likely), so we purchased a Mobile Suites with thicker walls and better insulation, as well as a number of other "appliances and systems" to make the home more like a home to us.

Our plan is to use what ever rigs we buy through all four seasons and all year around. I would like to do this for at least ten years or more and if we like it we may do this longer and maybe someday depending on how things go with the economy the 5th wheeler may become more of a home than my actual residence.  It would be really nice to see your rig both 5th wheeler and pull vehicle build sheets plus aux devices so we know what we must by to get the longeverty out of both rigs.  Please advise if that's possible. There is a place on the web where you can establish an account, upload large files and then supply the link where those files are and it free. the URL is media fire http://www.mediafire.com/  Thank you for this bit of information. I had no idea and figured they were all the same and for sure had no idea some did nit honor the warrantee if one was to use it all year around.

Refer to this current thread: rv-dreams.activeboard.com/t55309220/fifth-wheels-suitable-for-full-timing/ and then use the "search" function putting in "fifth wheel" you'll find several individuals discussing their individual set-ups. You'll need to narrow down what you are looking for especially what your budget is and requirements in the fifth-wheel especially in the way of size and maybe slides. What have you seen that you liked? See them, like them, research them. The referenced thread has valuable info. Once you establish what size trailer you are interested in and know the weights involved, then you will be able to start picking out your tow vehicle. Tow vehicles last a long, long time as long as you care for them and are pulling a load well within their means.
