Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Weather!

Ok, this is enough. I've been in the Black Hills of SD since the first of July. I've been in 4 hail storms, none really bad until this evening. Hail the size of golf balls or bigger.

Broke one of my vents and put several holes in slide out covers. Also put several dimples in my truck!

I've really enjoyed the weather here and was woundering if this is normal?

I hope to return next year and workamp for the summer.

Oh we'll I guess I have to take the food with the bad.

will survey the damage in the morning.

Jim

I'm with ya Jim. I was at work (Crazy Horse) and rode the bike in. I had it covered with the 1/2 cover but I still got some healthy dents in the front fender. The pick up truck parked next to it had dents all over and a broken windshield. We had several cars in our lot that had broken glass and lots of big dents. No obvious damage to the Motor home but will be checking the roof out in the morning. Here is a video I took while it was coming down.

Boy, that doesn't sound like much fun!!

I'm sure someone else can probably comment on what weather is usually like there from a more long-term perspective, but we were there the end of July-first of August in 2012 for a week, and the weather was wonderful.
My guess is weather can't be predicted from year to year.

We're from Florida and lived through 3 back-to-back hurricanes in 2004. Would I say that's normal - no. It had never happened before in my lifetime and hasn't happened since, but I guess it could happen again as who knows what weather will do. I hope the damage is minimal.

I will have to check the top of the 5r also, I know for sure one vent cover was broken. Sure was coming down for awhile. I wonder if Custer got hit like last time( about 5-6" on the ground). Oh, we'll still a great place to be!

Jim - During the 2 weeks we were there in August I asked one of the long time work campers at Happy Holiday Resort if this was normal. She's work camped at the same resort for 4 years, she said this year was really unusual. Last year was so dry no one was allowed to use their fire pit, outdoor propane stoves or any kind of device that had a live flame.

Jim, Phil & Rudee - hope the damage isn't too severe and you can get the repairs done quickly.

The old Cliche....you can run ,but you cannot hide applies to mother nature. We can select the beauty of where we go yet we have not figured out how to control the weather.

Hoping your damage is minimal and the weather turns for the better , sunny days are coming!!!

Our truck is beat up pretty bad on every panel plus the windshield is broken, the tauneau cover has dimples and some pin holes. The hail even broke the windshield wipers! Motorhome fared a little better, the outside compartment doors have several dents each, the slide out awnings and window awnings have some small pin holes and tears, the shower skylight is cracked and we lost a couple of the outside light lenses. Luckily our a/c is in the basement as most of our neighbors lost their a/c covers.

Insurance should cover most of the damage but I'm sure getting tired of filing claims. Between the flood this spring, Rudee's cancer in April, then her heart problems last month and now this damage it seems like all we do is talk to insurance companies about one thing or another. hmm

I sure will be glad when this run of bad luck turns around for us but being fulltimers is still better then the alternative. smile

I just started the insurance claim game. (State Farm) they said it would take a few days
to set up a claim center. Sure hope its close!
Yes, I bet y'all are tired of playing with the insurance companies. Get all this bad luck out of the way and will be clear sailing from now on.
Will be a pain to hook up tow and see claims adjuster then set back up again, and won't even be setting up in a new location!
Oh well as you said it sure beats the alternative.
Keep an eye to the sky as clouds are building to the north again.

It looks like Bill and I made it out of SD just in time.  We are parked here at Devils Tower since last night and we had quite a storm here.  Just lots of lightning and thunder and rain. Hope all of your stuff is taken care of quickly.  We had never seen so many hail storms as we have since we were parked there.

So true.  I am hoping that luck will be on our side while we travel West.  We just don't want to hit any snow in the mountains.

Loretta - not sure where you are tonight but hoping you are a long way from Northern Colorado!! Wild weather rolling through here this afternoon / evening, kind of weird to sit in the RV and watch it come in and then feel the 5'ver rocking with the winds. No hail yet (praying that none develops) but lots of wind, rain, lightening and LOUD crashes of thunder. Dale's new radar app on his phone is showing us where the most intense storms are, something tells me we'll be monitoring the phone all night.

We were in Mitchell SD the 5th of May, 2012. A hail storm totaled our 6 month old car (4500 miles) and took out everything on our RV roof. Some car dealerships across the road just got deliveries of new cars, several million in losses. Thank goodness for good insurance. DH and I decided to stay out of SD. Thought it would be just in the spring of the year.

After the storm passed I called our insurance company, while talking to the agent another storm came through, she told us to call back latersmile  Sounded like we were in a bomb shelter. Spencer was not afraid of thunder storms before, he runs and hides now if he hears or feels a storm.

Good luck going forward, maybe you have used up all your bad luck for a while!

What is it with hail in that area?  We were in Rapid City/Black Hills area for a week in late July and it seemed like we got hail every single day.  Guess we were fortunate that it was never more than pea/marble sized.   We stopped in Mitchell, SD (gotta see the Corn Palace ya know) and saw a pickup truck with so many huge dimple dents that it looked like the surface of a golf ball.  We consider ourselves lucky that we got out of the area without hail damage!

We are in northern CA right now and until this morning the weather has been great.  Nice and warm during the day and dropping a few degrees at night, making for great sleeping weather.  Not so this morning......it is COLD.  One more week and we are heading south.  smile  Are we spoiled or what?????

Sorry about everyones damages; but the main plus is none of the family is injured! Rudee; I hope they have the heart under control; as you know i'm a survivor. I survived last Winter here in lebanon; Tn, and am going for another round. They tell me it can get snowy and down right cold here; but this Old Yankee has seen 30+ below zero temps growing up 60 Mile south of Montreal. I lived in an old depression era house; slept up stairs in the attic with icicles formed on the roof nails. I know; was much younger then.
Enjoy your Winters where ever South you go!! PIEERE

Loretta - define COLD in northern Cal, please! Heading that way this weekend and will be around the Sacramento and Bay area through the end of October before we can head south. I am just really wanting to get away from rain after years in the Seattle area and then being in Longmont CO last week. I just want some place dry, Utah has been better but we've had 2 thunderstorms in the 3 days we've been here. Just glad they aren't lasting very long.

I remember back in the '60's when I was stationed at a small Army base north of San Francisco and near Petaluma.  This poor Oklahoma boy was stunned to see how much rain there was in that area during the winter.  Temps weren't cold, but it rained nearly every day.

Loretta - I can handle that!!

Terry - if you think the Bay Area gets a lot of rain in the winter, try Seattle, a little more rain and generally 10-20 degrees cooler. One more reason we are looking forward to heading south to AZ right after Dale's art show in Half Moon Bay. We are so looking forward to our first winter in AZ:)

Western Washington is now back to the normal pattern, cool and somewhat wet. We hit rain as we crossed White Pass (US12) yesterday on our way from Eastern Washington to the West.

In early January we will land for 3 months at Val Vista Village in Mesa, AZ for the second year in a row.

Bill & Ruth,

You're sure right about western Washington weather! -<50 when we got up this morning. From 90 days last week. We're so ready to be out of here!

Thank both for the recommendation for Sluys Bakery in Polsboro! Left a few bucks there but brought Viking Cups home to fellow camp hosts.

Sherry - we're well aware of the Half Moon Bay weather, but Dale is an artist at the Pumpkin Festival so we hope to be leaving there with a few more dollars in the bank account.

I DO NOT miss that Western WA weather, we're in sunny Utah this week. Lots of wind here today, we've had 2 thunderstorms pass through in the past 3 days but it clears up quickly and with a lake and mountain view from our campsite, LIFE IS GOOD!!!
