Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Introducing myself

Hello all, looks like a very informative site ~ glad I found you.  My husband is 73 years young and waiting on me to retire in 4 years.  We have been planning on selling our home right before I retire, paying cash for an Class A Motorhome and hitting the road.  He came home yesterday and suggested we sell our 1995 Cobra, make a few necessary repairs to the house and put the house up for sell before the end of the year.  We won't be able to buy the motorhome until we get money from the sale of the house and I'm feeling like we might not really know what we're getting ourselves into.  I think in my mind, it has just always been simple ~ buy an RV and travel!  I would imagine it's much more complicated than that.  We're talking about my husband, myself and two dogs (a westie and a scottie) living FULL TIME on an RV.  What if we don't like it.  Anyone else have the fears and any suggestions?

Shirley,

First of all, welcome to the RV Dreams forums.  And yes, it is a site where you can get a lot of information, not only in the forums from various participants but also from Howard and Linda's journal entries and other parts of the website.  You can even go into their financial pages and see what they are spending for all the various expenses that they incur.

As for full-time living in an RV, I am 67 and my lovely bride is 61.  We've already sold our home and acreage and bought the RV to live in until we can both retire.  Actually, our plans are to never again own a home, and if we eventually quit traveling, we'll either still live in the RV or rent something somewhere.  After all, we can't take any of it with us, so why have a bunch of stuff and a house that our sons will have to get sold or given away.

I'd say to do some research first to see if you think the financial side of things will work for you and whether you BOTH will like the idea of nearly the entire United States being your back yard.  Good luck with your research and planning.

Terry

We had the same fears but friends said what have you got to lose. so what, if it doesn't work at least you tried it and you can always buy something. If you don't do it, you will always wonder, what if. Life is too short. We sold everything. We are now coming up to our 1st year and loving, just loving every minute of it. There are trials and tribulations but hey, that is life. Either it is the S&B or the motor home. The front yard and back yard are way better in the motor home!!

This site is wonderful for all the help and support you need!!

Shirley: Welcome. I'm wondering why you decided that you might want to full-time in the first place. What are the positives to full-timing for you? And, what do see as the negatives to full-timing that might make you not like it? Very good advice from a previous post to look at the financial end first and work through that. There are many different ways to experience the lifestyle and if you look at the budgets of others, it at least gives you a place to start. As with any lifestyle change, cold feet aren't uncommon. It certainly helps if both people are dedicated to the idea. It must have been quite a shock when your husband brought up moving up the sale of the house!

Hi Shirley,
There are lots of questions to answer about transitioning to an RV. I read My House Has Wheels, that helped me. We aren't retiring though so it's not quite the same for us to CUT the cord and sail (or roll) away from that security. At this point for us it's a transition time, that may lead into retirement and may not we'll just see where life takes us.

I'm enjoying learning from these friendly folks and I'm sure you will too!

All the Best, Dana
