OK, we have been convinced. We have blown 3 tires in the past 3 weeks. 2 of those today 100 miles apart. I have the 215/80/16 GY Marathons with load range E. I want to put on GY 614 with the 17.5 rims. I have the room. Question: does anybody have a recommendation for a wheel and tire guy? I seem to remember Howard using somebody who ships. The last tire had total tread separation and did some cosmetic damage to the side panel and it looks so far like I might have a hydrolic leak at one of the levelers. We are by the road now waiting for Coach-net :(

As Lonney said, this source is highly recommended. Many of us have done business with Scott. We've bought a bunch of tires from him and were well satisfied with price and service.

However, please consider the Goodyear G114 "H" tires which Howard and Linda, and a bunch of us, use on our rigs and have for years. We know the ratings of the GY G614 tires. Had 'em. Not a particularly good tire, IMO. The "H" tires will last 3 times as long and will not blow out. We've seen the same blowouts with the "G" tires as you have had with the "E's". The GY G114's "H" tires are simply in another (higher - "commercial") strength class. They ride just fine as Howard, Linda and we can attest. There are charts to adjust pressure for lower trailer weights if so desired.

They cost more but are well worth the safety.

BTW on this trip we saw an "E" blow on a Montana right next to us on I-81. Not a pretty site.

Let me add my two cents worth to what Bill said.

You are going to have to upgrade your wheels to go to a 614 tire....almost for sure. Since you have to buy new wheels *why* would you buy more 16" and not go to 17.5" and a far superior tire? The G114 (the H rated Goodyear) is a totally different tire than the G614. I consider the G614 a "junk" tire in a trailer application (but OK in a Motorhome application). They have a terrible reputation. I personally have blown 4 of them before removing them and putting on Michelin XPS RIBs. I strongly suggest that you do not want them...it does not cost much more to go to the G114. Even with the bigger wheels the overall diameter is about the same (within 1/4") as the 614. Take a look at the tire section on Mark Bruss's website here.

Great stuff guys! Realy good write up by Mark Bruss also. I was a little flustered when I wrote I wanted the G614 tires. I meant the G611 17.5 tires. That is the direction I am headed in now. Any Ideas on where to sell the old 16" wheels and tires? I really don't want to carry them around either. We are now in Iron River MI in the UP. We are a long way from anything right now.

When we upgraded in Florida I just put the old tires and wheels on Craigs list and sold them in 3 days to a guy for his car trailer. I know some of the scaredy cats are going to say to stay away from Craigs but I've sold stuff all over the US using them and never had any trouble.

After having a blowout with my 16" tires this spring I ordered G114, 215/75R 17.5 tires on Hi Speck Series 3 Polished Aluminum wheels from www.trailertiresandwheels.com. I ordered them on a Wed. afternoon and they said they would be delivered on Friday. I found that hard to believe but on Friday morning received a call from the truck driver that he would be here in an hour. I was only about 400 miles from where they were shipped but I still found that amazing. They were delivered mounted balanced to the campground where I was parked. Great tires and Great Service.

I have the tires and wheels up for sale on Craigs list http://up.craigslist.org/rvs/4027707896.html and as a flyer around the town here in Iron River MI. I contacted scott at www.trailertiresandwheels.com and was told I can get the tires and wheels in 2 days. Wow!

@Lonney: We are 400 miles from you right now. I am not pulling without the change out. But many thanks for the offer. I have a local guy who is going to mount the assemblies for $75 in our campsite. It's not a hard job, I just don't want to do all 4.

@Dave: The same here, not taking that chance again.

When going on with the new wheels and tires, pay attention to the manufacturer's suggestions/requirements with regards to torque on the lug nuts.

This is perplexing ... Howard suggests Goodyear G614 235/85x16 ... as long as 5th wheel doesn't exceed 14-16K. My 5er's GVW is 15,000 lbs (at the last weigh I was at 14,000 total trailer weight and 2,800 pin weight) I think, great ... I'll spring for the G614's and then I read they're "junk" ... sheez !!

Regardless what a lot of people have an opinion of, the Goodyear 614's are a good tire. Keep the weight and the speed within reason, along with the tire pressure and you'll have no issues. One thing I have learned over 35+ yrs in the tire business those that fall in love with Michelin have a disdain for any other tire.

Having worked for the big 3 tire manufactures in my career, they are all about the same, not one is head and shoulders above the other. My opinion only.

I started out using 110 psi as many suggested, I then looked at the Goodyear tire pressure chart and decided to lower it to 105 psi ... just a little less pressure for my "max pressure 110 psi" wheels to deal with and still more highly rated than my OEM ST 235/80x16 E rated Trailer Kings. The Goodyears are speed rated L (75 mph), but I'm more comfortable at 60-65 mph.

I've been running on GY 614's for 8 years on 7K axles. I've had one tire loose it's tread but it never lost it's air. I think the sidewall had been damaged in a frame incident I had and the tread finally decided to peal off after it was damaged.

I run 60 to 65 mph and 105 psi cold....which goes up to 115 to 120 once they warm up according to my tire pressure monitor

If your RV came with "E" tires it would be WAY overkill to jump to a "H" GY tire. The GY "G" is a great replacement tire for anyone running at their weight limits with "E" tires. Since 2007 GY "G" and "H" tires are the premium choice. They have a stellar record since that era. I have ran two sets of each with MANY thousands of miles and not even a flat. There are lesser $ options but not for me!

I do run 75mph when the speed limit allows.

Our DRV came with 614's. Two peeled the rubber and damaged our camper the first and second tow. We replaced with new 614 and never had another problem. This was my experience. I have read countless horror stories about them though. Goodyear did pay for repairs and two new tires. But it was not worth the problems. We had a 32TK3 so it was in 17k weight.

trailer, tire and wheels in Akron OH they are great...we upgraded to 17.5 inch J rated 18 ply, $600 each and worth every penny
