Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Carson City is Smokin'... Literally!

There's a forest fire at Lake Tahoe, and the smoke has drifted over to Carson City... Looks like Beging Chinese smog, the sun is just an orange orb, can't see the mountains. There are advisories to stay inside, and a few little flakes of soot have floated in. The dog is acting very tired and abnormally mellow, possibly because of this. Not sure how bad this will be health wise, but I need to be here for a few more weeks. Hope it clears up soon!

Hi Hina,

Don't plan on the air clearing any time soon.  Not sure about a Tahoe fire (I hope not!), but the last of the smoke from the American Fire (in Foresthill) has mixed with the smoke blowing over from Yosemite and is a mess for your area and where we live in Placerville (1/2 way between Sacramento & Lake Tahoe).  Our local news said the Yosemite fire could burn for 2 months!  We have horrible, smelly smoke and ash as well.

Yes, it's the American fire, but someone here told me it was at Lake Tahoe (I don't have TV, relying on word of mouth and the internet) Funny, but coming from the SF Bay area, the smoke almost looks normal, like the "marine layer", that gray's up NorCal. Normally, Carson City has lovely blue skies and fluffy cumulus clouds. I'll be here another month or so before moving on, I hope things get better.

I posted a video of the smoke covering Carson City, it's less than a minute.  http://youtu.be/iQncD4qp88g

You reminded me how awful that is. In Tucson, it could be really bad especially combined with the dust and we could barely sleep. I think your mind keeps telling you that trouble is in the air. Here, they burn pastures and that is bad enough. Hope it clears soon.

Good observation, "trouble in the air". I have been feeling a bit more anxious, and the dog has been sleeping more, also more reactive to stuff I thought he was over. I'm paid up here for a few more weeks, have some more mail on the way, want to mod the RV a little more, and gotta plan the next leg of this journey, so I'll be here for a while.

We were planning on being in Auburn for the month of September but looking at the news it night not be possible coming through all that smoke.  What are your thoughts?

Loretta - we've been watching the Nevada / California DOT websites, we're supposed to be going through there this weekend over the Labor Day holiday. So far not seeing any closures due to smoke, there was a closure due to a sink hole a few days ago but that's resolved itself. We just keep watching and now we've found out the Bay Bridge will be closed this weekend which complicates our route into the Bay Area so we might stay outside of the Bay Area for an extra couple of days. I'm finding each state's DOT site to be helpful.

It seems the fire is on the east side, and the smoke is blowing over the mountains into Nevada. From the bay area, you're coming in from the West. Not sure where you will be staying in the bay area, but I liked Calistoga, which is the north bay, in Napa county. The fairgrounds are basic, about $35 a night, but the town is cute, and there are a lot of places within walking distance (grocery, laundry, restaunts).

Loretta,

The American Fire is close to 70% contained.  The winds usually blow to the north.  They have been also blowing to the east, so while some smoke/smell settles in during the night, it clears out during the day.  Even Lake Tahoe is supposed to clear out in the next few days.  I'd keep your plans and just keep up with the local news and CA DOT site.  You never know when a fire can start.  It's more hazey out than anything, and mostly just in the morning.  At least in the last several days.

Thanks Ruth.  We are still unsure if we will take that trip or not.  Like they say, RV plans are made in jello.  We'll find out later this week.  Were you taking 80 to the bridge?

Loretta - yes our plan was to take 1-80 all the way to Hwy 101. We might still do that but I'm looking at Passport America campgrounds near Sacramento to hang out for a few days and just go into the Bay Area a day or two before we have to be there for an art show. After all the money we just spent on getting the fridge fixed and now the suspension system installed in the truck we don't want to spend a fortune to stay in a paved "RV resort" parking lot.

OK.  I was thinking of Dutch Flat, since that will be nearby to my sister's.  We are still not sure.  Let me know if you come across something that looks good.  We are taking 80 also to Meadow Vista,CA.  Stay safe with those fires.
