Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
I've been a Lurker for quite some time. I luv the site very much. I decided around 2011 I wanted to live the RV life style. So, since then I have been getting things in order. As of now I'm totally debt free other than my house, I have budgeted it and plan to keep it for awhile. My Rig is a 1999 Fleetwood Bounder and Toad is a 2009 Hyundai Accent, both bought and paid for. Thanks to Howard's great info and tools/web site I have found the courage to make a go at it. Since I'm fairly young on the grand scheme of things, 43 yrs, I will not be able to go without working. The great part of that is my profession allows me alot of mobility options. I'm a Registered Nurse so travel is a great option for me. I have my budget set to work only 6 month a year, I quit my job, last Friday was my last day. As of Monday, I have signed up with 2 Travel Nursing companies, the transition is going much smoother than I anticipated. My girlfriend and boxer are coming with me. The girlfriend has been so awesome with support and is looking forward to the life transition. She is putting in her 2 weeks notice in the middle of July. Our first stop is Cherokee, NC. the 1st of August. One of my most favorite and awesome places, and I luv to trout fish.
Well I guess I have rambled on long enough, I hope to hear from ya'll and any advice/help would be much appreciated.
The Smokie Mountaons of NC and TN are God's country! We love the area!
Just a short ride from Cherokee will take you to Bryson City. A road turning north from Bryson City ends up as "The Road to Nowhere". Its construction was halted due to the outbbeak of WWII. It was never completed. What a beautiful drive to Bryson City and a few miles north to the tunnel which is the end of the road. Good parking area and a wonderful place to walk and picnic! Be careful not to distrub any Indian ghosts.
Simply Google "The Road to Nowhere".
Again, welcome to a great group of people who check their egos at the door and are eager to assist with great information and local knowledge.

We are about a year away from fulltiming and are leaving debt free and young (although 10 yrs older than you ) so we have to work as well. I am a RN and I was hoping to avoid doing traditional nursing, but have not completely excluded it (its a last option).
I would be very interested in your experience with your travel nurse assignments. I have heard you can negotiate more pay since they do not have to pay for housing for example. I also wonder if you can get assignments that are not in big cities - I really want to avoid that
Have a great adventure & journey & please stay in touch!

Hello Robert, girlfriend and boxer, Im new to this site too. Haven't made it as far as you yet but Im half way to having my RV. My time the winter kicks in here in Colorado Ill be heading south. I applaud you for making a plan and sticking to it. Everytime I hear these wonderful stories mu courage grows stronger. I think you will find this site very helpful. I have so far and looking forward to meeting people as I go. So welcome.
Welcome guys! We're also early 40s, and have now been on the road full time for 7 years. It's a great lifestyle, and being able to work in your travel nursing career is a fantastic way to go!
Congrats on your planning, and wishing you many happy adventures ahead!
Cherie, I have seen a few of your YouTube Vids on the lifestyle, very helpful, also when I was looking for internet options, Millenicom seems to be my best option vs the price, so I read your blog on your experience with them. I don't have to have the internet, like you guys, so I think I should be ok. It appears they are reliable, but not very forgiving of going over your alotted Data. I ordered mine thru the 3gstore, it uses the MiFi hotspot + router, 20gb data, for 69.99 per month.
Ann4now, So far my experience has been great with the 2 travel companies I've talked with. Your recruiter will try to find you jobs per what you tell her/him and your skill set. For example: My specialties are Operating Room, Dialysis, and Med Surg. I wanted OR or Dialysis as my priority and Med Surg as my back-up(Not really excited working on the floor at this point). I also want to work 3 12/h shifts, want to stay away from weekend work if possible, and want to stay away from call if possible. As far as pay, that has many variables and will depend on you as well. Basically from what I understand, it works like this: Institution pays travel company X $$, The travel company then takes that amount and divides it up for your individual needs as a traveler. Some of the things that may effect the bottom line hourly rate: Health benefits, Housing, travel expenses, License reimbursement, Car Rentals, plane tickets,The Travel Co. keeps some, ETC. The more stuff you ask for the less you will be paid hourly. Now as far as not working for a hospital, that may very well limit your opportunities drastically. I do know most companies have contracts with small rural hospitals all the way to Large Metro Hospitals. Me personally it makes no diff the type of hospital, I'm more looking for specialty/location I want, then will structure my contract from there. Almost forgot, some of the Hot Jobs that alot of these companies post generally attach some kind of bonus to them, either sign -on or finish, most of the bonus money has been btwn $1,500-$4,000, so that could influence your choices as well. Hope this helped.
Thank you, that is interesting. I will like to hear how your adventure goes in terms of how close a decent campground is to commute to a job, etc. You are on the 'front lines' and I have moved away from direct care and into case management. I have seen some sites for travel case management, but would love to do that online or use my many years in psych nursing online somehow
Anyway, happy adventures!

I am an RN also. Hitting the road after the first of the year. Looking forward to great adventures too. Hope to see you out there. Good luck and God bless.
Hi Cindi, Yes, I saw you too were doing the travel nurse jobs in an earlier post. I look forward to hearing about your adventures and I do wish you the best! Perhaps we should start a RN thread?
