Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

I read some review on car & driver about this model truck and if I remember it right (it was yesterday after all) it said that model truck unloaded would shake your teeth out driving unloaded or something like that but that it was a workhorse for heavy loads. Any other thoughts?

The very good and interesting thing about this model year, with which I have personal experience, all good, is that this is the last year for the Duramax / Allision that didn’t have all the EPA mandated “stuff” on it.  It may have the 6 speed Allision with the turbo brake assuming this truck is like the 2006 models with which I have a familiarity.  But I can’t confirm any of that from the pictures.

I am not endorsing this specific truck as I haven’t seen it. But this is a great model year and has a great power train for someone who needs an MDT.

I would get it.....but then I would have to buy me a fancy cowboy hat and some steer horns for the hood......and then teach Nikki how to bark with a drawl rather than a drool !!!

would make an awesome toad tho !!

Depends on whether there are air-ride seats.  It’s a true MDT and not too good totally unloaded.  Never intended as a daily driver that's for sure.  Made to tow.

Yep, like the baby Freightliner and many of the pre-2011  3500 / F-450 / F-350 DRW trucks, it’s not designed as a daily driver unless you’ve made some suspension mods - like air bags, etc.

We have a 2007 setup similar to this one. It handles our 15,000lb 5th wheel like a dream and is a very comfortable ride. Unloaded it is a bone shaker on things like railroad crossings and rough pavement but for the most part it rides like a 3500. I understand by adding front springs from an aftermarket source like Deaver along with some Bilstein shocks the jarring is reduced by 50%. I don't use it enough unloaded to justify the $2500 to add the springs.

You might try showing it on racingjunk.com and dieselplace.com in the medium duty truck section.

As stated above the ride is not smooth as a Cadillac would be, but with towing the 5th wheel it is a good drive, and without it, we'll obviously it isn't a daily driver. My dad normally uses this just to drive his 5th wheel to the beach (South Padre Island) and back, and drives it to work which is like 3 miles away from home so not many miles being put on it. It pulls the 5th wheel with ease and no issues. We did this one leaf spring I believe, but if you want more info I can always ask the mechanic who installed it.

I may have missed it somewhere, but does the truck have air ride seats?  You mentioned springs, so it obviously doesn't have air ride suspension.  Also, is there a fifth wheel hitch installed that goes with the truck?  If so, what kind and weight capacity does it have?

I should mention that I'm not asking for myself, but any potential buyers might find that information valuable.

I will get this info today if not the latest tomorrow, It does have the fifth wheel hitch installed and im sure we wouldn't keep it because he wouldn't use it on another vehicle since he's planning to sell his fifth wheel as we'll.. I will check the weight capacity on that hitch again today or the latest tomorrow.

Good questions by the way, thanks!

It does have front and rear airbags
Hitch comes with it and works with gooseneck trailers and 5th wheels
As far as weight is concerned he said its standard, I can look up the specific hitch to find out more specs on it if needed.

Most MDT Topkick’s in this class, that are not work truck bodies, have air ride seats.  Nope, not a B&K.  On edit I add, with air bags this also is a very nice upgrade makes a very nice difference in the ride solo and hauling.  Obviously this truck was an "up-fitted" truck.

It would still be nice to know the weight capacities of the hitch.  Some of the B&W hitches are 18,000 lbs or less in capacity, although 18,000 lbs would be good enough for a lot of trailers.  However, if one is considering the "heavier hauler," it may be because they have a heavy trailer.

Thanks, LouisRay87.

I'm actually surprised that the hitch is rated for that low of a weight rating, especially considering how big of a trailer that the truck could pull.  Then again, your dad's trailer might not be that heavy.  Anyone looking at the truck for a heavy trailer would likely need to replace the hitch with a heavier one.

And that's fine if it needs to be replaced cause the hitch can still be sold and pay half or most for the new/used one they get, it's still included in the sell. Yeah my dads trailer has a king size bed, shower, restroom, kitchen, kitchen table, and living room. The truck pulls it w/ no issues and no hesitation; I don't know the length or weight of it but it's a really good size.
