Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Potty Talk

Greetings

My wife and I have been full-timers for going on 2 years and have appreciated knowing we can go to this forum and ask questions and get good answers.

Our question is regarding any recommendations for toilet replacement in our 2012 Montana Big Sky. We currently have a Thetford side-peddle fush unit. The flush value tends to stick and allows water to be fed into the bowl until it overflows. Obviously if you are not home when it happens you get to clean up a lot of water (like we did tonight).

We have replaced the valve once last summer and now it is starting to act up again and we've had water overflows twice in the last month. I searched this web site and read previous posts about toilets but didn't see any particular recommendations about brands or types.

Primary question is whether the side peddle is better then the front-peddle setup. Thetford seems to be a good brand but we are open to working with any brand that works.

Recommendations? Experiences? - Art

BTW...we are loving the full-time lifestyle very much and see ourselves doing this for years.

Had 4 different toilets in 6+ years fulltiming. (Dometic & Thetford). In most cases the water valve has failed and overflowed the bowl. We have replaced a few valves but never had great success...hence the 4 toilets. Can't say any one was any better than the other but had my longest run with the cheapest plastic one I could find. It appears that cheapest is better. Good luck and always turn the water off when you leave the RV.

Ok here you go, I just installed a 12 volt switch and a 1/2" 12 volt water valve. When we are done in the bathroom we hit the switch, close off the water to the toilet, and no more over flowing toilet. Parts run about $60 to do this. Your other option is the Tecma Silence Plus, it is a dual flush bowl that has an electric flush button that mounts to the wall, we have one of those as well....I will NEVER use a pedal or handle type toilet again....

most valves malfunction because they have dirt in them or the return spring is getting soft or a simple O-ring going bad....might want to check this if your handy....rather 5.00 in parts than 200.00 in a commode that will just do it again

And if you are going to do it purchase a quick connect shut off valve to add to the line so you can shut it off in the bathroom if you need to!!

O.k., now I'm scared. Never thought about the toilet overflowing but with the luck (maybe not such great judgement) we've been having that could be next! 😄 We too have the Tecma dual flush and like it but I've read you can fill up your black tank pretty quickly with them.

Good idea Genecop. I had an electric flush Dometic...it was the first one where the water valve let go and flooded my RV. Not sure I would trust that the electric flush toilet as much as the separate water turn off you suggested.

Gene - the shut off valve sounds like a good immediate solution and I think we are going to try that for now. I've been bouncing around Google and reading a lot of opinions about powered 12 volt switches so I think I've got a handle on it. Do you remember the brand of switch you ended up using?

Thanks for your good advice...it is appreciated.

Mike

Last summer we did pull the toilet and replaced all the gaskets and the flush valve. Total cost was about $30 which is cheaper than replacing a toilet every time this happens. I'm quickly learning that you have to have no fear when it comes to repairs around these RVs. - Art

Art I got the switch from Amazon, $7,   Prime Products 11-0190 Rocker Switch with Chrome plate is the piece. A couple of other things, the valve is directional so make sure you pay attention to the ARROW, also in our situation directly behind the bowl was a 6-7" piece of 1/2" pex (water feed to toilet) this is the place I cut the valve in, it's a tight fit but worked perfectly. You might be able to find another spot in a cabinet behind the toilet, every condition is different, if you have any other questions feel free to ask.

Gene - as a follow-up...we did install a new toilet and installed a shut-off switch (like you suggested) on the water line. It works great and make me wonder why they don't come with them already installed.

Thanks for the idea...we can leave the RV with a little more piece of mind.

We had to open up the cabinet base in the bathroom and as long as we were working there put in a shut off to the toilet.  Very easy to shut off the water when we want.  There is a nice curtain that will go there very soon.
