Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.


We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

My experience is the private campgrounds that close for the winter are mostly open by April 15th. I know Elkhart Campground in Elkhart, IN opens April 1st for the season. Get a Trailer Life Directory, they show the open dates. You will be surprised to find that some are open all year.

Why are you in a hurry? Maybe you should move to the West Coast since most campgrounds in Washington and Oregon are open all year.  (We just did our taxes with TurboTax.  Washington state has no income tax. )

We traveled south from NY in January, and we did find open campgrounds. We used www.allstays.com as a starting point. They have an "open all year" filter that you can apply to your search.

Most of the Ohio State Park campgrounds are open year round. During winter months there will be very limited water and usually only one shower house open if it is heated. None of the sites will have water, but very few do anyway. All the state parks have black top roads and sites and all sites have electricity year round. Winter rates are also cheaper since the park stores and offices are either closed or have very limited hours until late April. There are several nice ones not too far off I-75 with the most northern one just east of Toledo.

We will be leaving Louisiana this Saturday and going to Foley Alabama for a week to visit some
friends and then starting our trip back to West Michigan around April 6th for Tax reasons.

For those of you that make the annual Snowbird trip back to the cold Northern states where do you
stay the night in the North as typically campgrounds don't tend to be open this time of year yet?

I figure once we get past Tennessee, it will be harder and harder to find a campground for overnight
camping especially the closer we get to Michigan.

I suppose it will be Walmart parking lots and truck stops??? yuck!

Would love to hear where others stay in the chilly Northern states on there way back home! :)

I am in New england Now......In the last week I have boondocked at 3 state parks.....1 nite at Mcdonalds(LOL..Good Wifi)....1 nite @ Cracker barrel.......Walmart......and 2 nites so far at the maple sugar house....

all this has ac cured in Mass. Upstate NY.....Vermont

Will Be in New Hampshire for Easter

and the Following weekend in Palmer Mass. for the Flea market opening!!


I mostly boondock....Moochdock......Stealthdock........and NinJa Dock!!!!

We are from Wisconsin and have been fulltiming three years. We go back to Wisconsin each year in early to mid April and have not had a problem finding open campgrounds as we head north. State parks, county parks seem to open April 1, but call ahead to see if water is turned on if you need it. We've also stayed at a few fairgrounds with camping that have been open. With a little checking around, we've not had a problem.

Lucky Mike, you can Moochdock here on Cape Cape for a bit if you wish. My 32' gas rig made it up and down to our side/rear driveway (hard packed, non rutted gravel), yours should make it fine. PM me if you want. (We are right down the road from Cape Cod Camp Resort in Falmouth).

No guaratees we will still be here later than early May.

This year hopefully will be the only year I have to get back this early due to a complicated Tax Return from retireing our 28 year corporation.

However, my accountant did say he cound file an extension so we don't have to hurry back if the weather in Michigan doesn't warm up.
I think we will take him up on that offer and get back a bit later.  :)

My DW is a CPA with her masters in Taxation. They are starting to process all their extensions now, as there is very little time to do all the complicated tax returns from their clients. She's stil doing 10-12 hour days (plus a 90 minute commet each way), I am suprised your accountant woudl have time to do your return, especially if you are retiring out of your 28 year old Corp.

I'd say take the extension, relax, and go to MI when its actually nice, which it seems you are considering :)

We have our tax accountant file an extension for us every year and don't worry about getting back by April 15th :)
