Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
We have a 2008 Jayco Designer 5th wheel. We worked at Amazon in Coffeyville, Kansas this past Christmas season. When it was time to leave, it was 16 degrees outside after having been below freezing for several nights. Kevin pushed the button to entend the landing gear and there was a clunking sound and then the motor stopped. He had to manually crank and crank and crank to get the 5th wheel hitched up. When we arrived at our next stop, the motor worked to bring the jacks down, but once the 5th wheel started to lift, the motor again died. More cranking. It definitely seems the motor is damaged. Has anyone had to replace their landing gear motor? We're wondering how difficult it is and how expensive it was.
Thanks for any input!!

Does the landing gear have a single drive motor? Most do. Find make and model # if possible and google or just google fifth wheel landing gear parts. Most common motors / parts are listed on e-bay. Single motor units cost $108 to $160. Motor units are protected by a 30 amp fuse and have a built in clutch that will make a loud clicking noise if something is binding in the legs, gears or the plastic gear box that the motor drives. If you can crank by hand is probably in the motor unit but check all parts before you order to make sure you don't buy parts that you don't need! On single motor units the motor is easy to change two bolts wires from the switch. Good luck

I experienced the problem you described with one of my two motors. It seemed to happen if I wasn't plugged into shore power and the batteries were not fully charged. The motor would get hot and shut down for several minutes and then start working again.
The clicking is the clutch problem others have described.
Make sure your batteries are putting out full power before changing out the motor.

I believe what may have happened is just the shear pin on the top of the leg broke. Mine did and it made a clicking noise and worked under no load when extending. I would pop the cap off the leg top and inspect. I bet the gears are just spinning on the shaft. Its not a bad repair...you just need a new shear pin to repair. Should only be a few bucks and some time.
