Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Generac generator

Generator turns on and runs like a TIMEX - however no electrical is being brought into the coach.

Checked the breaker on the generator - it was ON

Checked the 7.5 fuse - it looks brand new - which it is - generator only has 10 hours on it - 6 months old.

Breaker seems a bit "sloppy" from on to off and back to on.

Got an Rv tech coming on Monday - unit is under warranty - if I can solve it B4 he comes I'd like to.

Any ideas?

X2 on that, Dick.  Or if an automatic changeover relay, can you check for voltage at the input to the changeover relay with a volt meter?  (Don’t do it if you’re not comfortable with that process.)

You should have power at some changeover relay someplace if it is a built in generator unit.  If you have it there, going into the relay, then it is probably a bad time-delay in the changeover relay or simply a loose connection in the changeover relay box.

Forgive me for saying the obvious, but if you go to check for a loose connection in the changeover relay box, please disconnect all shore power from the pedestal first.

It is a built in generator with an automatic transfer switch. I've stared the gen while connected to the pedestal and while not connected - same results no power to the RV.

I'll wait for the Rv repair guy to come and check out the electrical side of it.

Nexus in the meantime is locating a Generac dealer in our area of Punta Gorda Fl in case it is not the breaker of ??????

thanks guys

Dick

I` m not sure if this can be related but a freind had a generator hooked up to power his house if there was an outage and one time when testing it out he had it runing and tunrned the breaker on when there was still power in the house and the generator would not put out and power after that. he fryed something in
side and was not a cheap fix. with the trailer if you were pluged in to shore power and ran the generator could that have happened just wondering!!

The automatic transfer switch is suppose to eliminate that possibility. It first failed on Thursday when I started it up in a rest area so I could exercise the generator during our last hour coming into Punta Gorda. I was going to run the RV A/C as it was getting hot. We were not plugged into any shore power.
I'm hoping it is the 30A breaker as I say it moves sloppily between on and off.
Thanks for the input.

It is probably something in the transfer switch since they can be troublesome. Nice to have, but troublesome. Our old RV required moving the shore power cord to the generator plug and we prefer the automatic transfer switch our current RV has.

Bill - I'm hoping that is not what it is as the RV being under warranty Nexus would have to try and find a Generac dealer/authorized Generac repair center in the Punta Gorda area. I really don't want to drive all over Florida to get to one. we are stationary here for 2 months, just arriving yesterday 11/1
I hope the breaker has gone bad!! :>)

On my generac quiet pack 40. When you push the start button. You have to hold it down for a second so that 12 volts can be sent to the windings to energize them. If they don't get energized the motor will run but the generator will not put out. I had downloaded the manual for mine that has all king of information. And it tells you in their to do that.

What did you find out was causing your generator not to put out last year?

handsome51 - as you mentioned, holding down the start button for a few seconds did the trick.
