Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.


We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

WH seems to work fine on propane but with electric it initially heats the water fine when it first comes on or when you've used it for awhile and it's had to reheat.  But if the water sits in the heater like overnight then the first person to take a shower will have only warm water and will run out quickly.  The second shower will be fine...Is this an element issue or some sort of setting that needs to be adjusted?  Thermostat maybe?

Is the electric being turned off at night?  There is no setting that I'm aware off that would cut back on heating durning the night and keep the water hot durning the day. Electricity is going off, the water is running out or you are having an element issue.  Elements are fairly cheap and can be replaced easily.

My guess is the thermostat...but I have no idea why it would work ok for propane but not electric. Maybe there are separate thermostats for each?

Have you owned this RV since new?
Reason for asking is that a previous owner may have put on a timer.

Hey guys, sorry, just got back from mountain trip with RV. We dry camped and my WH worked fine using propane. But a few weeks ago when we were hooked up we were having trouble with the electric. Might be an element but it heats fine when you start using it. I used the night time scenario as an example but it can be due to sitting for a few hours and the first use the water will be warm but not hot. Then after it is allowed to refill the next use shortly after will be scalding...hmmm. Now I am talking about electric only. Propane seems to have no issues.

Jims carrilite...haven't thought about a timer having been placed. We were not the original owners but we've had this camper now for 3 years. We do a lot of boondocking so I'm not sure if I would have even noticed this issue before. Although the first year we had it we took it to a KOA and everything worked fine, as I recall. How would a timer be set? Would there be an aftermarket device placed on heater outside or somewhere else?

I have no clue as to how it would be set but it would be in the power supply side.
After your last post though, It sounds more like a thermostat is stuck.
If you take the electrical cover off there should be a thermostat like the normal house would. It should be replaceable.

I watched a mobile tech replace my Atwood electric heating element and thermostat. There were 2 silver disc's (about half dollar size) that he replaced, and it didn't look easy.
