All free: Passport America (find those Passport America campgrounds), GasBuddy (find cheap fuel), Poynt (find cheap fuel, movie theaters, etc.), Urbanspoon/Yelp/TripAdvisor (find restaurants), Bubble (bubble level, fun to show off), GPS Essentials (compass and other GPS tasks), Evernote (keep notes like shopping lists between your phones and computers), Google Earth, Great Clips (find and check-in to Great Clips locally for haircuts), Google Translate (translate between languages and hear it), Keyring (save those loyalty cards that use barcode so you don't have to carry them), Lookout (antivirus and find my phone), Historical Marker Database (what historical markers are near), PicSay (photo editor), Magnify (use your phone as a magnifying glass), ShopSavvy Barcode Scanner (read barcodes and QR codes and comparison shop), Soundhound (what is that song that is playing), Sky Map (night sky map), Skype (if you have a front facing camera), Speedtest.net (speed test), unit converter (convert between miles/kilometers, acres/square feet, etc.), Weather Underground/1Weather (weather), WiFi Analyzer (what wifis are near and what channel are they on), Wikipedia (look stuff up), Vimeo (plays vimeo videos like the youtube app plays youtube videos). I have all of these and more on my HTC Thunderbolt.

Weather Bug, fantastic weather app. Depending upon what phone you have FoxFi is great for (free) wireless internet
teathering but will not work on HTC EVO 4G yet, works great on all Samsung phones.

How exactly does FoxFi work? I looked at the comments left for the app and am not sure what it does. Do you get free data if you use it? I have 5 GB on my phone and 5 GB on our Verizon mi-fi. How would this app help? Thanks!

We tether our droids (HTC Incredible II) to our laptops via PDA net. Works great when we don't want to run up our usage on the Verizon mi-fi.

Foxfi gives you wireless data so you can get on the internet with a wireless device like your laptop computer or Ipad. Just like getting on the internet with your phone but you can use it to get online with other devices.

Now, I have Sprint so I have unlimited data and it is not a problem for me, however for those with capped data plans you will want to keep an eye on how much data is used.

Note that FoxFi does not work on HTC phones except using Bluetooth and it doesn't sound like this will change. I wish it worked on HTC phones since it is more convenient to use wifi to hook up computers than a cable with PDAnet or Easytether, plus FoxFi is free. FoxFi uses the built-in WiFi Hotspot for Android so you don't get charged the monthly fee from the carrier.

For just the occasional need:

Power Bubble level (No, it isn't accurate enough to level the coach.)

Stopwatch and Timer (Can be used to verify vehicle's speedometer accuracy - suggest that passenger operate it.)

I LOVE Evernote, use Places and TripAdvisor a lot and really appreciate your list.

There's some great apps listed here. Use GasBuddy, EasyTether, & Lookout all the time. Flashlite is helpful but I replaced it with a Color Flashlite that can flash in different colors plus add 'HELP' to a screen if stranded somewhere. Maps not only gives routing & directions but can locate Wal-Mart, McDonalds, or any other store in the area plus search & find campgrounds, parks, etc nearby. Once directions are created, I can switch to Navigator then to get verbal directions. MyWeather has been more reliable & user friendly than Weather.com, weatherbug, or Accuweather. SatelliteDirector has been fantastic to locate the direction for manual TV sat setup. DirecTV gives show schedules while TVListing works for campground cable programs. CNN, YouTube, most TV networks, & many national banks have apps. TuneIn for free radio & music. SuperSudoku & SpiderSolitaire for games. MoboPlayer for more videos than YouTube. Gmail & Email for messages & Google Reader for quick access to all the blogs I follow. I've set my favorite programs to update automatically & trying out BlueStacks Cloud Connect for backup of apps/data if my phone gets lost or takes an 'unscheduled' bath in a lake or toilet. All of these are free apps. Hard to remember NOT having a fon that does more than just talk. LOL

rvingft: Glad you found the apps useful. You will find more as time goes on. Just like me.

I didn't talk about the standard built-in apps but if you bring up "Navigation" directly it will let you "Speak Destination" which we find useful. Sometimes it doesn't get it right, but you can try again. It also might cause a laugh when it gets it wrong. Just remember to select "Navigation" and not "VZ Navigator", which costs a monthly fee.

One thing to warn people about is to look at the permissions for the apps especially when you have to manually update because the permissions have changed. I mention this because I hear people are uninstalling FoxFi because the permissions have become quite invasive. This is one of the differences between Apple and Google, Apple doesn't let anyone but Apple have access to core functions, but Google has a permission system that allows access if the user says it is OK.

Red Wolf: That is not a phone app, it is a mobile web site since you use your browser to get to it instead of loading an app. But it works and I thank you. I do wish their "Park Details" pages were also set up for mobile, but rvparkreviews is a low budget operation so I can't complain and know how to enlarge the web pages and scroll around.

I just wanted to thank everyone for contributing to this thread. A few months ago I switched from a Blackberry phone to a Samsung Android and had not yet messed with the apps. You guys sure opened my eyes to the possibilities and I've already downloaded several nifty apps. Thanks!

The Red Cross just put out a free "First Aid" app. One reviewer said, "just get it since you want it ready when you need it." I agreed and downloaded all 26MB of it just in case.
