Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Jury Duty - have you ever been called?

In looking at options for establishing residency (for the purpose of purchasing and registering an RV), one of the considerations mentioned is the prospect of being called for jury duty.

Choosing to "reside" in, say, South Dakota would have certain benefits with respect to RV ownership but could be problematic for the poor full-timer who receive a jury notice in the middle of winter. cry

I'd like to ask: have you ever been called for jury duty while traveling outside of your residency area? If so, how did you handle the situation?

We've not begun traveling yet, so I don't have first hand information for you.  However, I recall a post somewhere on one of the three forums I frequent regularly that spoke of this issue.

They mentioned that when one gets a call for jury duty, one can contact the court clerk's office and explain that you are traveling out of state and will not likely be back in time to sit on jury duty.

My understanding is that they are pretty lenient with those that have a legitimate reason for not being able to "sit."

I just got called for jury duty in Texas. We have workamping plans through the end of 2012. I just called them and explained I would be working out of state until the end of the year. No big deal.

My DH got called just after we started traveling ft.  We called the court clerk and they excused him.  But, they said he may get called again and there was no guarantee he would continue to get excused.  So, we'll see what happens next time.

My husband also just got called for Livingston TX. He told them we are Escapees and travel fulltime, they said, no problem, if you come through town, please volunteer at that time. Nice!

I got a notice from South Dakota. Our mailing forwarding service knew what the envelope contained and sent forms for us to complete along with the notice. The forms stated that we traveled fulltime and would not be in the area. I then received a large questionaire packet to complete. Again, the mail forwarding service told me how to respond. I've heard nothing more and that was several months ago. Get a good mail forwarding service and they should be of assistance.

Another thing - we wanted to register to vote. Mail service sent us the forms, we filled them out and sent it back and they then took the forms to wherever they needed to go. They also sent us our absentee ballot request forms and an envelope so they go to the right place.

 Phyllis and Leonard,

That is good information to know so that when someone does set South Dakota residency that they know what questions to ask of the mail forwarding services.

Would you mind sharing who your mail service is?  After all, they are providing excellent customer service.

We use My Home Address in Emery. They are quick with a response and there has been no issues with getting out mail timely. Another thing they do is get out vehicle registrations completed each year. First time is costs $20.00 a vehicle, subsequent years it is $10.00.

A lot of folks use Alternative Resources also. Those who do speak highly of them.

Thanks.  Those have probably been mentioned before on the forums, but yours is the first that mentioned their "proactive" approach to their customers.  (At least, that I can remember.)

And, for those new to the forums, this might be the first mention of those two services they have seen.

I hope you dont live in Pennsylvania because when I called and stated I worked out of state for months at a time, they told me it didnt matter and if I didnt like it to take it up with the State Legislature since they passed the law.

At least thats the way it works in Allegeheny county and according to the idiot I talked to. I wrote a letter to the Office of Jury Management and got it pospone twice, finally they said I definately have to come in when I am back there in December. I plan to be moved from that crappy State by then.

Tell them you have read the papers, you seen the nightly news and you have already formed an opinion on the court system.........they will most likely boot you out of the jury pool....

when you are selfemployed you cant leave your business to go sit on a jury for a few bucks a day and miss out on sales or business in general, not to mention driving downtown and paying 10-12 a day to park. I dont get paid by anybody when I'm not working so I dont understand why bureaucrats dont understand that.
