Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

ironing and shoes

I'm thinking a lot about what clothes I'll need, shoes are going to be a big issue for me as will be polartec, sweatshirts, winter wear in general.    I'm very cold-natured, yet I prefer to visit cool climates, so I always struggle to stay warm.  I have long underwear in every weight and configuation you can imagine smile.   I love athletic shoes and boots, and they take up space.

Our trailer has 2 small closets in the bedroom and one small one in the "hall", which my husband sort of molopizes.  We use the underbed storage a lot and that's where we keep shoes.  so 2 questions:

  1. How others store shoes and boots?
  2. I love the space bag idea, but does everything come out rumpled?  Do you keep an iron?

We carry a small table top ironing board and an iron. They are rarely used because most of our clothes are wash and wear.

My wife wears mostly sandals so they fit in the bottom of the closet. She has a pair of boots and a couple of pairs of athletic shoes. All of these are in the bottom of the closet 2 ft X 2ft floor space.

I have 1 pair each of sandals, boots and athletic shoes....that's all I ever need. These are in the bottom of a second closet that I use for my clothes.

We've used space bags and some items will come out a little wrinkled so we will run them through the dryer at a campground. Caution, some of the space bags will lose the vacuum if you try to put too much in a bag. The commercial is a little misleading. We've stuffed ours with about the same amount of items shown in the commercial and we found that about 2 out of 10 bags will lose the vacuum during a year of storage.

A lot of RV'ers will put warm clothes in a plastic bin in one of the outside storage comparments until needed.

Okay, so I LOVE shoes... Johnny has 2 pairs -- white athletic shoes and black dress shoes. I have golf shoes, sandels, boots (short ones and tall ones), high heels, athletic shoes, walking shoes, ballet flats and a couple pair of slippers. I'm still working on where to put them. I've seen some shoe holders that fit on the sides of the bed that I'm considering adding.

It's a matter of figuring out what you need for your planned lifestyle and then figuring where to make it fit. I'm still doing some business consulting so I need dressier business appropriate wardrobe good for at least a week. That adds some complications for me, but we're figuring it out. I'm finding it's an evolving process --- but I'm not willing to give up cute shoes! lol

I got several of the hanging shoe bag things that hold 6-8 pairs of shoes. The soft, cloth type. I cut in half and hung one on the back of the dinette at the door, used the glue on hangers, yrs ago and they are still there. Can take off shoes and place in the slots. Bingo.
The other half I mounted on the side of the bed, the bed spread kind of cover it. Did the same on both sides of the bed so THE WIFE has room for some of her shoes and I have for me. These are hung with two cup hooks each.
We find this to work really well.
THE WIFE also put up 4 glue up type hooks for hanging clothes that we will wear the next day. Only one has come loose in 3 seasons on board.

For shoes we purchased some canvas type material, cut it up as needed and my wife stiched up shoe holders that hang over the edge of the (base) of the bed.  With a little hook-latch fasteners I mounted them over the edge of the base of the bed we can now hold 4 pairs on each side of the bed.  For your clothes, get creative--do you have pillow shames on your bed? Take the pillow out now fill it with clothes, looks the same works great and gives extra storage, and if you are careful they will stay neatly folded and (almost) wrinkle free.

Shoes! My wife was a shoe fanatic. We finally reached an agreement where she had to get rid of two pairs of shoes that I had never seen her wear every time she wanted a new pair of shoes. It worked out but it wasn't easy.

(Hmmm. I hear ya. Call me Imelda. An aspiring shoe maven.)

Sadly, I think the hard truth is you (read: I) have to just 'thin the herd'. Same with coats et al. It's just physics.

Do you have any 'basement' storage to change out winter/ summer stuff? Or could you use the underbed for that? I feel for you- with two people storing clothing vigilant organization is even more critical. Can you add any vertical storage anywhere?

As far as 'warm feet' go: Uggs type boots/slippers are the snuggliest to me (apologies to our vegans). And good soft wool socks. Last winter I tried those gray felt boot liners (for workboots) from the shoe store to squeeze another season out of my worn sheepskin slippers and discovered that they are terrific for extra insulation. And cheap. A real bargain.

Sorry, I have no experience with the space bags but they look pretty awesome. Probably a fluff in a dryer would poof everything up to normal. I hope to hear of others' experience with them. Mildew and moth protection- big plus!

I have a hanging cubby in my coat closet at home. Love it- stores my (many) flip flops, water shoes, umbrella, dry bags, hats etc. Helps with neatness and reduces tracking in of debris and cluttering the floor with shoes. In winter, it stores gloves, scarves hats etc. I will buy the wider version for storing rolled tops and fleece items in one of my wardrobe closets.

For me part of this lifestyle is about paring down and being less encumbered by stuff. Most of us have had a lifetime of training to obtain more stuff. Now to discover which stuff is really needed and which is just our baggage :)
good luck
