Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
I have an older RV and although I don't plan on doing this now eventually I will get a newer model RV. I was wondering if any of you have ever used a consignment lot to sell your RV and if so would you advise it ?
I've never used an RV consignment lot but I have used consignment dealers for other large ticket items.
Here's why I would use a consignment dealer: > I don't want to be bothered with selling the RV > The RV is taking up needed space at my property or I'm paying to store it but no longer use it. > Eventhough the consignment fee may be as much as 25% of the final selling price, I don't need that money. In other words, I can afford to pay someone else to sell the RV.
I would sit down with the consignment dealer and find out:
1. How they plan to market the RV. 2. How long does it normally take for them to sell an RV. 3. Set a beginning price, a negotiate to price and an definite no less than this price for the RV.
If it hasn't sold in several months I would relook at the price and adjust down as needed.
A consignment dealer is a great way to get the RV out of your space and onto their lot plus you don't have to deal with prospective buyers.
The biggest issues are how high is the consignment fee and how well do they try to sell the RV. If you are paying 25% of the sales price, I would expect an aggressive marketing effort by the dealer. If the fee is only 3%, I wouldn't expect much of an effort.

Be careful. Often an RV on a consignment lot is "as is" and not insured. A friend had to clean up coffee and cigarette stains that were not there when the RV was put on consignment and the consignment dealer did not keep the RV plugged in so the batteries were abused.

I used PPL motorhomes to sell a previous 5th wheel because they have the traffic through their facility whereas I would have to show the unit on an appointment basis. We were pleased with the process.

About the only reason I would use a consignment lot is the Dealer would not try to downgrade your unit in favor of one of his new ones. PPL in Houston has an excellent reputation.
