Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Water Pump

Hi, we are brand new to RVing and this weekend decided to try filling our water tanks.  When we got to our campsite with a full fresh water tank, we could not get any water through our faucets.  Finally hubby dumped water slowly into the water pump which worked and water ran.  Is this normal or did we do something wrong?  Any responses would be great!

Jen,

First of all, welcome to the RV Dreams forums.  There are a lot of knowledgeable folks here and they are friendly as well.  Questions and comments are always welcome.

While I can't specifically address your pump issue as you didn't mention brand or whether it was new or used.  However, pumps (in general) can lose what is referred to as "prime" and one has to fill the pump with a liquid to "re-prime" the pump.  So, what you have experienced may not be unheard of, but it needs to be watched.  If it continues to lose "prime" and not pump when needed, you may need to look for leaks either in the pump itself or in the plumbing to see where the water is going.

Your husband did the right thing in priming the pump.  Should it be that you find that the pump has a leak, then it will either need repair or replacement.

Jen, Terry is right on the money, typically pumps should be self priming and you would be required to nothing more than fill the fresh water tank and turn on the pump.  They are demand on, meaning as soon as you open a faucet the pump should come on and when you turn it off the pump should go off.  If you continue to have to prime, then you may need someone to take a look at it.

Thanks, I don't know what brand of pump it is, but the trailer is brand new. Are we maybe doing something wrong when we filled the water tank? I looked some info up and all of them said you don't need to turn on faucets etc to clear air....

Thanks for your replies!

Jen

Jen, I'm not sure of your setup but I know on our rig if there's a kind of switch or valve in the utility bay that allows either filling of the water tank or using city water directly.  I have on occasion left the switch on "water tank fill" and find that the water pump will not work.  It evidently has to be on "city water" to pull water from the tank.

Jen, I hope the water pump is OK. I do have a question though. Since you are new to RVing and to this trailer, did you do the water tank sanitizing routine? Most often, it is recommended that we use a rather strong solution of bleach in the tank and pump it through all the rig and drain it all out. Refill, flush and then drain again. After this, fill with fresh water and you should be OK. Seems there are some ugly things that like to grow in the tanks and bleach kills them.

Also, when the water heater is empty, it takes all the water from the pump first, then when it gets full, water is available to the cold and hot taps in the sinks and shower.

Good luck and good RVing.

Hello Jen

I bought a new toy hauler (TT) and it did the exact same thing. It would not self prime. Every time I emptied the fresh water tank or sometimes just traveling down the road the pump would loose its prime. I replaced the pump and never had a problem since then. Have your RV dealer take a look at it as it will probably be under warrenty.

Thanks for all the advice.  I will be asking our dealer about the pump losing its prime.  And yes the tanks were sanitized and cleaned out!  We are already enjoying the trailer
