Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Radio antenna puts tears in roof ???

Has anyone had problems with the radio antenna hitting the roof so hard it tears the roof ?

We just got back from a Texas to Florida to Texas trip and I was washing off the roof and found that the radio antenna is slapping the roof so hard it has torn small little holes in the roof.  I can only guess because it sticks up farther than the air conditioners its hitting overpasses and then slapping the roof.

We have it in getting some other stuff fixed, well the same stuff they supposedly fixed last time but didn't.  So I asked them to look at the antenna problem.  Not 2 hours later I get a call saying Keystone will not warranty fixing the holes in the roof because by the looks of the picture the dealer sent in the antenna looks a tad bent and if it wasn't bent it would not hit the roof so hard as to put holes in it.  I looked at the antenna and it does have a tad rake to it, but not so much that it would cause that problem.

Any thoughts would be great

thanks

Rusty

I seriously doubt it is hitting an overpass. More likely it is bouncing as you travel.....

I'll agree with Gene in that most overpasses are higher than what the antenna would be, unless you have a super tall RV.  Another possiblity would be hitting tree limbs, but one normally isn't traveling at a high enough speed for that to be a bother.

Most trees on highways are getting "trimmed back" by semi-trucks that are 13' 6" tall.  So, unless you antenna is higher than that, I'd guess there is another problem.

Ok I measured the height of the antenna from the ground to the tip of the antenna. Its 15'2" roughly.

If your antennae is 15' 2" high in the traveling Posistion it's amazing you still have an antennae at all. 13'6" is the national maximum HT for vehicles.....

Yes, thats why Im a bit upset about this situation. I think keystone should take this into consideration when building this toyhauler. Its a fixed antenna so I cant adjust this thing. I took a look at my fathers rig "Land Mark" by heartland and his antenna is mounted to the side of the unit. I am thinking about cutting the antenna so that it measures the sam height as the air conditioners.

Rusty, I believe you even though it's hard to believe. 99% of the overpasses you would be unable to go under. I can't believe Keystone would build a Rig that could not safely travel on our roads....

Gene ,I think maybe you are misunderstanding the problem. The trailer is pretty much standard height, it's the antenna itself that is extra long or misplaced.Am I correct on this Rusty? At least they installed your antenna.Forest River did not even install a radio antenna on my unit. The cable runs into the wall and goes who know's where.confuse

George, yes I did understand (I THINK). even thought the trailer is at the correct HT, I am still amazed that an antennae would be installed that sits at 15'2"..... From what I have seen the first trip out that would be ripped off. Unless it is some kind of flexible whip antennae which still would not be good I don't get it.....G

Yes it is a whip style, kinda like car antenna. It mounts to the roof. When I stand on the roof next to it, it reaches just under my waist. My rv is standard height. at least I think lol

I think this was a bad design, from and engineering stand point. Just puts a bad taste in my mouth when they would not warranty the repairs.

Finally got a new roof. They replaced it under warranty.

Thanks for the update Rusty. It's good to hear about a resolution to a problem.Sometimes on forums we hear about the problem and what everyone thinks will solve it but never hear about the actual solving of the problem.Nice to hear Keystone stepped up to the plate.

I'm very surprised they would have replaced the entire roof. A patch would be sufficient and preform quite well. Assuming that the roof issue was just a couple of small holes from the antenna whacking it....
