Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Effective AC Use

Sorry about the subject... Wasn't exactly sure how to condense my question to a few words... lol

We have a 40ft toyhauler with 2 AC units -- One ducted with a thermostat in the living area and one with controls on the unit in the bedroom.

They both cool great -- that's not the problem.  What we're finding now that we're transitioning to fulltime living is that the freezing breeze in the living area makes ti very uncomfortable whenever the AC runs!  We end up constantly bumping up the temp to stop the freezing breeze.  And then it eventually gets too warm and we need to turn it down.  My thought is that the thermostat should control this, but it doesn't seem to.

When we first purchased this 5er, we were told that the most effective way to use the ac was to always run the living area unit on HIGH COOL to avoid it freezing up.  We were also told to open the "dump vents" on the unit when we first set up to coool the interior quickly.   BTW, right now these "dump vents" are closed and I'm still feeling the breeze...

Any ideas/suggestions on how to make this set up work better are appreciated.  Also, anything we should check to uncover a problem if there is one...

You should be able to adjust the vents so they don't blow cold air directly at you. Does your unit have a remote thermostat? You may have a similar problem that we run into and that is the remote thermostat is on a wall that is getting direct sunlight. The wall warms up and the thermostat keeps calling for cool. Not sure what HIGH COOL means for your thermostat, but on ours we leave it on AUTO for the fan setting. If we don't use the auto setting the unit will run all the time. With it set to auto it will cycle on/off.

Thanks Dan.

We have a remote thermostat. It's on the wall just before the steps to the bedroom area. Maybe I'll pick up a small thermometer and put it in that area to check out the actual temp there.

We do run the fan on "auto." We have High and Low settings on Auto as well as High and Low settings on the continuous on setting. I just moved it to "LOW Auto" to see if that makes a difference.

Two suggestions:  First, if the thermostat is not “digital” change that out.  Not expensive and the ones from Hunter version from Wally World work just fine.  You can then move the temp in 1 degree increments and that can make a huge difference in comfort.  The older type, with the spring and slider control, are just very poor as they have to have a larger swing in temperature before they turn on or off the unit.

Try  - http://www.klenger.net/RV_General/HVAC_Hunter_Tstat/index.html

for instructions and

Second, run the fan on low if you like.  It shouldn’t freeze up in normal operation.  If it does, then it is probably low on coolant.  That will make a large difference in the comfort level.  We run ours on low all the time after the rig is cooled down - especially in the evening.

Hope that helps.

Bill

Thanks Bill. It seems to be better with the fan on Auto Low right now. I've been wondering if we could change the thermostat to a digital one. This one seems pretty cheap. I actually think we had it replaced under warranty the first year. But that was 3 years ago and my memory isn't what it used to be...

We have two 13,500 BTU Dometic AC's in our MH with the Dometic Duo-Therm digital thermostat mounted in the hallway, near no windows or outside doors. Each AC is individually controlled (by zone number) and we leave them in Auto most of the time. The way they explain it is, if the room temperature (at the thermostat) is 8° or more away from the set point, then the fan goes to HIGH automatically. If the temp. is withing 4°-8° of the set point, then it blows on MEDIUM. If the temp. is less than 4° from the set point then it blows in LOW fan. It will then switch itself to AUTO to maintain ±2° of the set point after it reaches that point.

Just an F.Y.I. and data is from Dometic for all their AC units.
