Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

fridge economies

Just curious, does anyone know if it is more efficient and /or economical to run your standard rv fridge on propane or ac? I know it depends on the price of propane and power but if all things were at average prices?  Does that make sense?

The difference is pennys either way and only would come into play if you are paying for electricity on a monthly stay.

Daily and weekly normally come with electric included.

In the grand scheme of expenses, the cost of the fridge is like 199 on the list. :)

When your campsite includes electricity, running the fridge on electric is most certainly cheaper (free). However, the fridge uses very little propane so the cost of running the fridge on either source will be very low.

I really was just curious...we are usually in parks on a monthly basis and therefore do pay for power, sometimes as high as 19 cents a killowatt... but budget was not my reason for asking, I just wondered what the difference might be, if any.

Just from personal experience, I think it cools better on propane. In the past we always used electric since getting propane refilled required moving the coach. Now that I have added an external tank I may go back to running on propane. Some parks make a good income selling electricity to campers and our coach is almost all electric so I think we can save $$ by using propane.

Since the gas absorption fridge cools best when it is hot you are going to get better performance when using propane than when using electricity as the gas heat can do a better/faster job of creating heat than the electric heater can. I have never done a calculation but I suspect that if you have to pay for electric or pay for propane you will be better off paying for the propane due to the higher efficiency.

Thanks Bill and Dan, that's what I wanted to know. I thought I had heard that the fridge worked more efficiently on propane and just wondered if anyone knew if the cost was comparable to electricity.
